A Birds eye view of the sunrise

Red-tailed hawks have amazing eyesight. Their eyes are huge compared with the size of their heads, and they can see tiny movements from much further away than we can.

Imagine standing in the field and spotting a tiny mouse moving through the grass. You might not notice it at all. Viktor could be sitting high above and still spot that little movement.

His eyes are also really good at working out how far away things are. That’s pretty important when you’re flying through the sky and trying to catch your dinner! 🐭

Hawks can also see more colours than we can, including some types of ultraviolet light that are invisible to our eyes.

So while we see a beautiful, quiet camping field and a sunrise over Cissbury Ring…
Viktor might be looking at a whole world of tiny movements and details that we can’t even see.

Meet Viktor! 🦅

We’re incredibly excited to introduce the newest member of the Wild Heart Hill team.
Viktor is a magnificent Red-tailed Hawk.

With his powerful wings, incredible presence, and unmistakable red tail, Viktor is already turning heads. We can’t wait to share more of his journey, personality, and adventures with you all.

Give Viktor (and the wonderful Sharon) a warm welcome in the comments! 👋🦅

There’s someone new in the family… 👀

You might have to look twice.

Hidden among the brambles, watching quietly…

Can you spot him? 🦅

His name is Victor. But that’s all we’re saying for now… 🤫

Watch out there’s a tiger about! 🐯

We came across this striking Jersey Tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) on the hillside today Although sadly, this little beauty had already died.

Even so, it was a fantastic find and a chance to have a closer look at one of our most distinctive moths. Its bold black-and-orange markings certainly live up to its “tiger” name! 🖤🧡

🐛As caterpillars, Jersey Tigers feed on a range of plants, including nettles, brambles, and dead-nettles. So remember that those patches of wild vegetation you might overlook in your garden can be really important for wildlife.

🌙 Jersey Tigers are unusual among moths because they can be seen flying during the day, especially in warm, sunny weather.

🧡 And that flash of orange on their hindwings isn’t just for show…. when disturbed, the bright colouring can startle predators and give the moth a chance to escape.

Although we would much rather have found a live one, finding this Jersey Tiger was still a wonderful reminder of the fascinating wildlife living right here on the hillside. 🌿🐛🦋

Have you ever spotted a Jersey Tiger?

In amongst the grass at the time of year, we sometimes find a little bit of magic! ✨

Female glow worms glow brightly to attract males flying by… 🐛

It’s got to be one of the most magical experiences to see a glow worm in the UK!
