Five-year-old Henry joined Assistant Course Designer David for a ride around the beautiful Blenheim Estate, on a very experienced 20-year-old horse, as preparations gather pace for the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials.

Less than two weeks today the riders competing as part of The Blenheim Challenge will be getting ready to trot-up in front of the stunning backdrop of Blenheim Palace! We are very excited to be bringing this new and innovative competition to the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials. There has been lots of interest in how The Blenheim Challenge will run, so we thought we would take this opportunity to share some high-level details:

- Two teams: Rising Lions (a team of under 25 riders from Great Britain) and Stars & Stripes (a team of exciting international talent, featuring riders representing the United States and an overseas selection from Australia)

- 4 riders on each team, all competing within the main CCI4*-L in the normal way

- Prior to each phase a random draw will be made to be pair each rider in a team against a rider from the other team, resulting in 4 rider v rider matches in that phase; a new draw will take place before each phase

- Dressage scoring: the lowest score in each rider v rider match will win a point for their team (half a point each in the case of level scores)

- Cross Country scoring: the lowest number of penalty marks in each match will win a point for their team (half a point each in the case of level scores or both riders clear inside the time)

- Show Jumping scoring: the lowest number of penalty marks in each match will win a point for their team (half a point each in the case of level scores)

- Each team will have two one phase only ‘jokers’ to play during the competition; a rider carrying a joker for a phase will receive double points for that phase

- Recognising the important role played by the grooms in each team, an additional point will be awarded to the horse competing in The Blenheim Challenge judged to the best tuned out at the first trot up

The team with the most points at the end of the competition will be crowned the winners of The Blenheim Challenge!

We’re delighted to welcome Bedmax back as our Official Bedding Supplier for Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials 2026!

Throughout the event, Bedmax will be helping to keep our equine competitors comfortable with their purpose-made pine shavings – highly absorbent, dust extracted and designed to provide a clean, supportive stable environment.

So while there might be plenty for our competitors to think about over the week, they can at least rest easy knowing their horses are resting well!
