📣Calling Lantern bearers of all ages! 📣
Are you ready to illuminate the city? 👀

Lantern bearers will assemble at the bottom of Bell Square, Victoria Street at 7PM.

Then at 7:20PM, we'll be treated to Flora Rising; an empowering performance of dance, music and storytelling. Produced by Sterran Dance, featuring original music by Ni Singh, Flora Rising explores the powerful balance between nature and human experience.

At 7:30PM the parade sets off through Wolverhampton city centre, led by NeONE the Wonderer performing songs of protest from his new music project as the procession travels through the city towards St Peter's Square.

At Approx. 7.45pm - 8.15pm
The parade culminates with Out of the Deep Blue;
An outdoor physical theatre performance featuring a 13-foot tall Puppet operated by 5 puppeteers and a female dancer.
This spectacle is designed specifically for family and festival audiences and tells the magical story of Eko, a sea giant who rises from the deep ocean and encounters, a courageous little girl called Violet. This non-verbal performance explores our relationship with the natural world.

Discover work by over 28 visual artists across our three main exhibition venues — Mander Centre Community Hub, The Grand Palace and St Peter's Collegiate Church — alongside a touring commission through ILLUMINATE West Midlands.

🌊 OUT OF THE DEEP BLUE
Experience Autin Dance Theatre's immersive outdoor theatre spectacular in St Peter's Square, bringing dance, theatre and a giant sea creature into the heart of the city.

🏮 LANTERN PARADE & LIGHT TRAIL
Join our spectacular community Lantern Parade, led by Gatis Community Space, then follow the light across 12+ city-centre venues and businesses, discovering illuminated artworks, installations and window displays.

🎭 LIVE PERFORMANCE
More than 30 local performers bring music, dance, spoken word, performance and creative events into venues and public spaces across the city.

✂️ MAKE & TAKE PART
Try something yourself with creative workshops including papermaking, life drawing and film exploration, alongside making, mending, repair, sustainable fashion and opportunities to learn and share skills.

🎬 AND THERE'S MORE…
Discover film screenings, open studios, The Human Library, the Black Country Artisan Fair, community activity and unexpected creative experiences throughout the weekend.

Gatis creative team have been running a range of workshops in the lead up to this years Fringe Arts Festival. The workshops have involved making a range of items from willow lanterns (to be carried during the parade) to upcycled works of art that will become features of our city centre light trail.

Workshops included:

* Public workshops at Gatis & Wolverhampton Art Gallery where people made willow lanterns.

* Session with the Steel Bones group at West Park Hospital who made willow star lanterns.

* Session with St Andrews Primary School where we coloured in sea creatures which have been scanned in to create a digital seascape, along with a range of sea creatures made from upcycled plastics which will be used to create feature windows.

* Session with West Park Primary School where we coloured in sea creatures for our digital seascape and creating nature inspired pieces out of upcycled plastics for another feature window.

* Session with SUIT at Asylum Art Gallery where participants created either star lanterns or their own personal creations.

Light Trail:
Another piece of work the creative team have been working on is to create a light trail around the city centre, working with local businesses to create feature windows and lit premises highlighting amazing architecture (look up!).

All of the work created by local schools will be displayed within these businesses for the duration of the
festival.

Lantern Parade Prep:
Lantern artist Adam Billington has been working on developing two feature lanterns ready for the parade on the Friday night. He is linking these lanterns to both the illuminate theme and the Autin theatre piece which has a focus on the ocean.

The opportunity to work on Fringe is allowing him to develop his work exploring bringing puppetry and movement into his lanterns. As an organisation it is important to Gatis that we walk lightly on the earth and showcase ways in which we can use the resources we have available in creative ways. This years work is focussing on upcycling plastics and reusing different materials to create our lanterns. What are this years feature lanterns going to be? Well you’ll have to attend the parade to find out!

Join willow lantern artist Adam on the 26th of October for a free workshop and learn how to make your own willow lantern in preparation for the Fringe Arts Wolverhampton Lantern Parade coming this November!

Fringe Arts Wolves begins long before festival weekend with communities across Wolverhampton helping to create the lanterns, creatures and artworks that will eventually illuminate the entire city!
