Remembering Queen Elizabeth II today, on the fourth anniversary of her passing.

Amongst our significant collection of historic artwork, we have two paintings at The Windsor Guildhall of the late Queen.

This one was painted by Theodore Ramos (1928–2018). It was a gift from the Royal Albert Institute Trust to Windsor Guildhall in 2002. The Queen wears the Prince Albert Sapphire Brooch, which was a gift from Prince Albert to Queen Victoria (her Great-Great-Grandparents) the day before their wedding.

The Windsor Guildhall was visited several times by Queen Elizabeth II.

Want to see the Guards marching in September?

💂🏼‍♂️ A highlight to any visit to Windsor is to watch the guards marching through town, on their way to and from Windsor Castle.

🇬🇧 The days on which the guards march along Windsor's streets and into the Castle are scheduled by the British Army and can change at short notice.

🥁 A band usually accompanies the guards, although this is subject to weather conditions. To see the schedule for September, click the link in comments, today's stories or pop over to our website.

💂🏼‍♂️ The guards march from Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street. The best places to see them are on Windsor High Street, Castle Hill or on the Corn Exchange under Windsor Guildhall. They leave the barracks at 10.45 for actual Guard Change Ceremony inside the Castle at 11am. You can watch the old guard leave the Castle and return to the barracks around 11.20am.

🥁 If you want to see the actual ‘changing’ ceremony inside the Castle grounds you need to buy an entrance ticket to Windsor Castle and allow plenty of time to get in. Ticket link in our Bio ⬆️ or link below.

☕ Stop for coffee at The Shambles (pictured).

🏛️ Standing proudly in the heart of Windsor, just a stone's throw from Windsor Castle, the Windsor Guildhall is one of the town's most iconic landmarks. Our beautiful Grade I listed building has been at the centre of civic life for more than 300 years, blending royal heritage, local history and contemporary celebrations under one remarkable roof.

Built during the reign of William III and Mary II in the late 17th century, the Guildhall has witnessed generations of history unfold. Its walls tell the story of Windsor itself, with portraits gifted by successive monarchs from Elizabeth I through to Elizabeth II, reflecting the town's unique connection with the Royal Family.

Over the centuries, the Guildhall has served many purposes. The Council Chamber hosted grand balls, council meetings, public gatherings and elections, while from 1690 to 1971 it functioned as a Magistrates' Court. Even Queen Victoria's would-be assassin, Roderick Maclean, appeared before magistrates here in 1882 before being committed for trial.

The Guildhall continues to make headlines today. In 2005, it hosted the wedding ceremony of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, followed later that year by the civil partnership ceremony of Sir Elton John and David Furnish. More recently, in February 2023, it became the backdrop for the announcement of the Windsor Framework by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Today, this historic building remains a vibrant part of Windsor life. As well as housing the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum, the Guildhall is a sought-after venue for weddings, private dining, corporate events, investiture celebrations and even film and television productions. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours and discover fascinating heritage features, including spectacular chandeliers commissioned by King George IV and on loan from the Royal Collection Trust.

Whether you're attending a wedding, exploring Windsor's rich past, or simply admiring its stunning architecture, Windsor Guildhall is a place where history is not just preserved, it's still being made!
