Wem Carnival

This is the Official page of Wem Carnival which takes place on the first Saturday of September each year. Parades at 13.30 & 19.45 which is illuminated.

The Carnival was first held in 1911, used as a way in which to commemorate the Coronation of King George V. That procession consisted of the members of Wem TT Band, the local Scout troupe, members of the U.D.C. masters and pupils of the near-by Grammar School, British School and National School, the Friendly Societies (in their full regalia, including their banners) and the areas parishioners and

townsfolk in fancy dress. This was followed by sports events and a dance on the Castle Field, and entertainment at the Cricket Pavilion. The evening consisted of a procession, which was by torchlight, and a Cycle Carnival. From that day to the present, interest in the Carnival itself has meandered, some years fully focused on it others it was neglected completely. Through wartime and the 60s its popularity sunk for obvious reasons, but was revised fruitfully in 1978 - and has continued every year subsequently, with the original format of the 1911 Carnival still in use to this day.

This Sunday, Quiz & Chips at The Castle Wem from 7pm
It is the monthly quiz, Rich's easiest one yet 😜
£10 for a team of 4, with some great prizes and a prize raffle too

This month we hold our annual Duck Race on the Roden...hundreds of little yellow ducks get their yearly outing down the river and cascade down the weir - Sunday June 21st @ 2.30pm
You can reserve your ducks at our sales events, as listed below:
CoOp; Saturdays 6th, 13th and 20th June, 10-2
Town Hall; Thursdays 11th and 18th June, 9-12
You can also purchase them bankside before the race. If you cannot make it, but still want to take part, message our page and we can send you a payment link...no excuses now 🤣
