BITS & BOBS Events - Raising Funds for Prostate UK and Breast Cancer now

BITS & BOBS Events - Raising Funds for Prostate UK and Breast Cancer now BITS & BOBS started in 2018, inspired by the reality that many of us have had friends or loved ones affected by breast or prostate cancer.

Sadly, some lives have been lost due to late detection, something we’re passionate about helping to change.

“It was just a terrible way to find out actually this breast cancer that you thought you dealt with, through tamoxifen and radiotherapy, seems like it's reared it's head in another part of the body.”

In this episode of the Breast Cancer Now podcast, returning guest Laura Ashurst shares her experience of living nearly 20 years with metastatic breast cancer.

Laura speaks about why she thinks she has survived so long with a metastatic diagnosis, about the importance of holistic care and the importance of mental wellbeing. They discuss the need for more consistent support and improved data collection.

Motivated by survivor’s guilt, she now advocates for improved treatment access, awareness, and outcomes for others with metastatic breast cancer.

“My twin’s diagnosis prompted me to check my breasts.

“I went to the doctor after my sister’s diagnosis saying, “I'm really paranoid I'm going to get breast cancer”.

“There was nothing there. But I think my body knew, I just couldn't feel any lumps.

“It was only a few weeks later that I noticed that my ni**le was inverted, so I went back. I was immediately referred to the hospital. Even then, the doctor couldn't really feel anything other than a slight thickening. There were no lumps or anything.

“I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. My sister had exactly the same diagnosis, except she found a small, pea sized lump in her armpit and then when she went for her mammogram, they found a very small lump in her breast, which she would never have felt.

“She had a lumpectomy. I had to have a mastectomy, because it had already spread quite extensively. I think they said it was something like diffuse, so it just had spread in a slightly different way. That was why it wasn't presenting as a lump.

“I keep thinking, I wish I could have found it earlier. But if my doctor had sent me for a mammogram when I first went, I’m not sure the outcome would have been different, as my mammogram came up clear when I went back with the inverted ni**le.”

Lis’ story is a powerful reminder that no one knows your body better than you. So get into the habit of checking your breasts regularly. It can help you feel more confident in noticing new or unusual changes. There’s no special technique. It’s as simple as TLC:

Touch your breasts

Look for changes

Check anything unusual with a GP
