Why is acting the most personal of our crafts?
1. Unlike a musician with a violin or a painter with a brush, the actor is the tool. Their body, voice, and inner life are what shape the performance. This makes acting uniquely vulnerable and exposed, as there is no separation between the artist and the art.
2. Strasberg believed great acting demands truthfulness—not imitation or pretense. The actor must reveal their sensitive psyche in front of others, risking judgment or rejection in service of the story.
3. Because Acting challenges you to engage with your whole self, your vulnerabilty, and core emotions. Acting becomes a natural journey of self-discovery.
Credit to actress Joni Kamen for this brilliantly brave natural performance.
