Contest Four: Dylan
In the words of Keith Donnelly…

“…and then along came the dark times - Covid hit!
When we finally escaped Lockdowns and Craziness, Warwick Folk Festival was at its fantastic new home by Warwick Castle.
The plan had been to do Disney Songs for our next concert.
But the theme really didn’t capture the imagination of many performers.
So I changed the theme at the last minute when I realised that the concert pretty much coincided with the 80th birthday of one Robert Zimmerman.
I confess I wasn’t sure. Was Bobby D a tad to close to being ‘Folk’ (with a capital F!) for the nature of the contest?
Who knows?
But I really shouldn’t have worried.
The show was magnificent.
It worked brilliantly in its new home - The Avon Marquee Stage.
I’m proud to say that more than a few of the audience came up afterwards to tell me it was the best show they’d ever seen.
My silly little competition - the best show they’d ever seen!
Allan Richardson’s winning song was ‘Sonnet 18 Babe’ his brilliant mash-up of Dylan and Shakespeare.
How to follow the best show folk had ever seen?

Keith Donnelly’s ‘I can’t believe it’s not a folk song’ competition.”

Contest Three: ELVIS!
In Keith’s words…

“In the last post I asked how we could ever follow the ABBA show.
Well I certainly wasn’t going to risk letting the audience decide again. (Not when people were shouting out things like ‘Slipknot’ and ‘Bowling for Soup’!)
I decided to go massive.
I chose the King!
The Elvis concert was nothing short of incredible.
We were back in a sold out Guy Nelson Hall and after the first two years the competition had already become somewhat legendary!
It had ‘gone viral’!
There were some well expensive Elvis suits on show, as well as some pretty awesome wigs, one performer (who shall remain nameless) even played a tune on what he claimed was the King’s toilet! (Anyone remember the Didgeriloo?!?)
It was all magnificently surreal and it was won by…
Anyone remember?
How could you possibly forget?!
Tommy the Tortoise!
The world’s first ventriloquist mime act alongside his handler - my friend Ali Rowe.
Tommy performed a ten second rendition of ‘A Little Less Conversation’ which almost brought the house down and completely stole the show.
He was the clear winner (always chosen by audience reaction).
Of course this had to be the year that I’d had the bright idea of allowing the winner of the contest to perform their song again in the main marquee (which was back that year) at the beginning of the final concert of the Festival.
Tommy strutted his stuff again, to the delight of those people who been in the song contest that afternoon, and to the total bewilderment of the thousand or so people who hadn’t!
Where did we go after Elvis!?
