Donations - As a community Pub, our charitable objective was for the benefit of the community. The management group requested the volunteers who ran the pub to suggest how these profits would be redistributed amongst the community.

A meeting was held recently and a vote taken. It was agreed the profits would initially be split into two funds.

The 1st fund - An amount would be set aside whilst a sub group of volunteers explored the possibility of a lasting legacy venture within the community. Details of this can be found in the next Focus magazine, and in coming months.

The 2nd fund - An amount would be distributed amongst 8 charities within the community of Thorverton.

We are pleased to announce that the pub has now donated the funds to those chosen charities. We thank them for the contribution they make to the community, and we wish them all the very best with their future endeavours.

A community run pub is not just a pub in a community, but an entity that is RUN BY the community.

Over the last 8 months, Thorverton has once again proven why it truly is a special place to live. The community came together to save one of its precious assets, volunteering their time, energy (and sanity) to provide for each other. Offering new ideas & new concepts, and putting their heart and soul into making each of them the success.

Our lease officially ended on the 31st July, the sale almost finalised. We look forward to it reopening as soon as possible, as that was above all, the primary aim… to keep the lights on, the fires burning, and the beer flowing.

Thank you to our 53 volunteers for running a business in your spare time, you have been absolutely amazing. See you on the other side 🥰

UPDATE: We have 2 square and 1 round top table left.

Through sales made so far, we have raised £210 for the local charity (which the pub will match). We only have a few days left before we have to vacate the pub, so if you are interested, we will need to arrange pick-up/drop-off this weekend if possible.

The tables that were used in the pub over the last 5 months were donated by a close friend who is a trustee of a local charity in Tiverton, obtained when they took the premises over from a cafe.

UpliftTiverton is a local charity seeking to improve the lives and opportunities of children aged 0-5 years old. If anyone would like these tables, please get in touch to discuss making a donation. All proceeds will go directly to the charity.

Since the pub closure, our wonderful volunteers have continued to raise even more money for charity.

At the volunteers evening on 25th June, we held a raffle selling off the remaining stock, raising £315. The winners of the quiz that night; The Ratcliffe Elite, chose the charity and they asked for the money to be shared between Lucy’s Larder, CHATS and FORCE Cancer Charity

The Community Pub has always been passionate for raising money for charity, especially as the business itself was set up with donations from the community. In the 8 months of operating, the volunteers and customers have raised over a staggering £2930 for charity.

Look out for the next post for more information.

With the sunshine out today, it reminds us of the beautiful flowers that have been planted and cared for outside the pub over the last few months. Thank you to our gardening group; Dors, Julie and Rachel for your care and attention.

A huge thank you also to the library group. Another fantastic community initiative, strongly supported in the community survey, and led by Mandy G, Caroline B and Clive. The library; paired with the Coffee & Cake in the day has been very popular, and by being situated in the snug, was a perfect space for the book club in the evening.

The community pubs doors were closed for the last time Saturday night after a truly classic Exeter Inn evening; with nice music, peaceful atmosphere and great conversation.

Big thanks to Noel T for running the bar over the last 8 months. He built up great relationships with the local breweries to bring us a fantastic selection of beers and real ales. Wine is one of our biggest sellers, and Andrew S and Jan W did a wonderful job of offering variety to our customers.

Special thanks needs to go to Sue Roberts for dedicating almost an entire day EVERY week to clean the lines, ensuring the beer served was of both good quality and taste.

And finally, thank you for all the bar volunteers; Sue, Noel, Ross C, Sabrina S, Jan, Stephen T, Andrew S, Guy, Neville, Andrew F, Andrew W, James P, Laurie L, Dick P, Caroline B, Sue B, Fiona T, Trevor S, Caroline P, Paul C, Rhys R, Ward, Wendy, Shirley, James C, Ross.

When the pub reopened, the Exe Valley League approched us asking if we would be interested in joining. We went out to the community and over the last 6 months The Exeter Inn has been playing every week, total of 18 games.

Yesterday was their awards ceremony and The Exeter Inn came 3rd. We couldnt be more proud of them.. 😊

Special congratulations goes to Sam Browning who was awarded “most improved player of the season”. Sam other achievement was he came 2nd in the only 4 people who achieved an “out” of over 100 this season, with his score being 116.

Well done to all the players who represented the pub and good luck next year. Bry and Paul U, Holly B, Sam B, Adam B, Guy B, Rob F, Fred H & Simon B.

Last chance to taste some of the amazing cakes our volunteers make, this Thursday - Saturday 11-4.

Our Coffee & Cake has been a big hit, especially for those in the village that aren’t “pub goers”. We have given people the opportunity to catch up with friends, or just relax in a peaceful environment during the day.

Thank you to each of the volunteers that have shared with our community their hidden talents of being able to make “exceedingly good cakes” (hopefully it’s not trademarked).

Thank you Denny and Jane for coordinating the team, you did an amazing job. Thank you to Sally T, Helen R, Julie C, Pat, Neville L, Posy F, Sue V and Judy B, Denny D and Jane G. 🥰

As we enter our last week, Sally (head of cleaning) would like to thank her entire team for their hard work over the last 7 months. They were up in the early hours cleaning the pub, (sometimes before heading off to their ‘day jobs’), 5 days a week, every week, to ensure the place was s***k and span for us to relax with friends.

Thank you to Amanda C, Lynne F, Claire N, Clive, Helen R, Jan W, Shirley, John H, Jules, Jane G, Pat, Rachel, Guy B and Wendy K.

Since day one, the compliments have been flooding in about the feel of the place, how beautiful and homely it is. From the lighting to the snug, from the toilets to the flowers. Someone once described the pub as “an extension of their home….their lounge” and what a beautiful way to describe it.

Special thanks must go to Sally T. Someone who “didn’t want to get involved”, but offered to coordinate the cleaners. Not only did she do that, but she transformed the pub with her exceptional eye for detail, and her artistic flair. She was constantly looking for ways to complement the pub. The pubs ambiance truly reflects the community spirit and warmth, and we all have her to thank for that. So, thank you Sally, for all you have done for The Exeter Inn. 🥰

Update:
In anticipation of the upcoming sale, it has been agreed with the owners, that our lease agreement will terminate at the end of July.

With this in mind, we held a meeting with our volunteers and took a vote on when to close our doors. As there now appears to be no prospect of bringing the pub into community ownership, it is with a heavy heart of ALL our volunteers, that the decision was made to keep with the date suggested in this months focus magazine; Saturday 21st June. This will allow us time to clear out and prepare the pub for handover end of July.

We have been reassured that the sale of the pub is moving forward nicely and predicted to complete at the end of July - so we hope the pub won’t be closed for too long. As you can appreciate, we are not part of the purchase arrangements so this information is not official, and we do not expect to be able to give you any more facts/updates.
