⛪ Thornaby Town Hall – A Proud Piece of Our History 🌟
Before South Stockton became Thornaby-on-Tees, the community marked its independence with the creation of Thornaby Town Hall — a building that still stands as a symbol of local heritage and pride.
📌 Key Moments in Its Story:
• The foundation stone was laid on 25th October 1890 by John Steel, Chairman of the South Stockton Local Board.
• Designed by James Garry and built by W.C. Atkinson, the hall took two years to complete.
• In 1892, the same year it opened, South Stockton and Old Thornaby united to form the municipal borough of Thornaby-on-Tees.
• The clock tower, donated by Alderman William Anderson, proudly displays our motto “Always Advancing” and began ticking on 27th January 1892.
• Inside, the Town Hall once showcased a stunning circular staircase, domed cupola window, and grand tiled entrance hall.
• Though extended in 1892 and 1940, later additions didn’t match its original Victorian grandeur.
• After changes in local government, the building fell out of use—until 2012, when it was proudly brought back under the care of Thornaby Town Council.
Today, this Grade II listed building stands as a lasting reminder of community spirit, history, and resilience. ❤️
