We are thrilled to show Nessie Stonebridge, one of East Anglia’s most dynamic and exciting artists, during Stories of Guinness.
Shown here is “Prey, Pray, Prey”, a painting that was based on Stonebridge’s encounter with two wild kestrels.
But Stonebridge is not a wildlife artist in any conventional sense. Her paintings are rarely concerned with describing what she sees. The natural world provides the trigger, but realism is not the target.
Instead, her work is driven by instinct.
A fleeting encounter in the landscape — a heron rising from a marsh, the frenzy of rutting stags, the territorial aggression of swans, a sudden movement glimpsed at the edge of vision — sparks a chain reaction. What follows is an intensely physical process - like a Rorschach test come alive: observation collides with instinct, then emotion, powered by lived experience and subconscious observation, shapes the paint in phases of chaos and structure.
Come and take a look at Stonebridge’s exhibition at at Elveden Hall on 13 June. Entry to the exhibition is free for Stories of Guinness ticket holders but you can also visit the exhibition by appointment. Email us at [email protected] to book a viewing on 13 June.
