We are thrilled to show Nessie Stonebridge, one of East Anglia’s most dynamic and exciting artists, during Stories of Guinness.

Shown here is “Prey, Pray, Prey”, a painting that was based on Stonebridge’s encounter with two wild kestrels.

But Stonebridge is not a wildlife artist in any conventional sense. Her paintings are rarely concerned with describing what she sees. The natural world provides the trigger, but realism is not the target.

Instead, her work is driven by instinct.

A fleeting encounter in the landscape — a heron rising from a marsh, the frenzy of rutting stags, the territorial aggression of swans, a sudden movement glimpsed at the edge of vision — sparks a chain reaction. What follows is an intensely physical process - like a Rorschach test come alive: observation collides with instinct, then emotion, powered by lived experience and subconscious observation, shapes the paint in phases of chaos and structure.

Come and take a look at Stonebridge’s exhibition at at Elveden Hall on 13 June. Entry to the exhibition is free for Stories of Guinness ticket holders but you can also visit the exhibition by appointment. Email us at [email protected] to book a viewing on 13 June.

13 JUNE | AN HEIR’S RECKONING | STORIES OF GUINNESS | ELVEDEN HALL, SUFFOLK

What does it mean to inherit a great estate in the twenty-first century?

In this conversation at Stories of Guinness, novelist Anna Hope and biographer Catherine Bailey explore the tensions surrounding land, wealth and responsibility — themes that echo across both fiction and history.

Anna Hope’s novel Albion reimagines the English country-house novel for our time. The story follows the Brooke family as they gather after the death of their patriarch at their ancestral estate, confronting competing visions for its future — from ecological rewilding to elite luxury development. Critics have described the book as a powerful reworking of the country-house tradition, exploring inheritance, climate anxiety and the lingering moral questions surrounding land and privilege.

Historian and biographer Catherine Bailey brings the conversation into the sphere of real-life dynasties. Her bestselling work Black Diamonds recounts the extraordinary saga of the Fitzwilliam family and Wentworth Woodhouse — one of the grandest houses in Britain — whose inheritance sparked bitter family conflict and financial catastrophe. Through archival research and dramatic storytelling, Bailey reveals how immense wealth, political power and family rivalry collided within the walls of a single estate, exposing the fragile foundations beneath aristocratic privilege.

The discussion will be moderated by Debrett’s historian Eleanor Doughty, author of Heirs and Graces and an expert on modern British aristocracy. Drawing on her work documenting Britain’s titled families and their changing place in contemporary society, Doughty will guide a conversation about what inheritance means today — and whether the great estates of Britain represent a burden, a legacy, or an opportunity for reinvention.

Tickets for this panel discussion at Stories of Guinness are still available.

On 13 June, Arthur Guinness, Lord Iveagh, will open Stories of Guinness, our one-day festival at Elveden Hall, with the extraordinary origin story of one of the world’s most iconic dynasties.

In fact, his book, Guinness: A Family Succession — published in anticipation of the House of Guinness tv series — was in many ways the germinating seed of the festival. What began as a conversation around his family’s remarkable history has grown into a full day of talks, music and art, exploring inheritance, empire, architecture and the evolving meaning of the great estate.

Drawing on family archives and rare material, Lord Iveagh traces the rise of the Guinness family from eighteenth-century Dublin to the creation of a global enterprise — a story not only of ambition and innovation, but of philanthropy and the shaping of a city.

Join us as he sets the stage for a day that unfolds across Elveden Hall.

Few places capture the layered story of Britain’s great houses quite like Elveden Hall — and on Saturday 13 June, it becomes the setting for a remarkable conversation at Stories of Guinness.

In Houses of Guinness, Ben Cowell, Director General of Historic Houses, sits down with architectural historian Adrian Tinniswood to explore the lives, legacies, and transformations of one of the most fascinating dynasties associated with the British and Irish country house tradition. Together, they trace how estates like Elveden are shaped not only by architecture, but by inheritance, ambition, and the shifting responsibilities of stewardship.

This conversation sits at the heart of a wider one-day festival — Stories of Guinness — which uses the history of the Guinness family and their Suffolk seat as a lens through which to examine bigger questions: inheritance, empire, land, and the evolving meaning of the great estate in modern life .

For Historic Houses audiences, it’s a rare opportunity to engage directly with the ideas that animate the sector today — how historic homes endure, adapt, and remain culturally alive.

Set within the extraordinary surroundings of Elveden Hall, the day unfolds through talks, tours, art, and performance — bringing together scholarship and lived history in a setting uniquely suited to both .

Join us for a day where the story of one house opens onto a much larger world.

It’s not every day that Elveden Hall opens its doors to the public.

On Saturday 13 June, we present Stories of Guinness — a one-day festival set within this extraordinary house, once home to the Guinness family, and rarely accessible in its full splendour.

Across a carefully curated programme of talks, conversations and performance, we explore the story of the Guinness dynasty and the wider world it inhabited — from empire and inheritance to architecture, land, and the shifting meaning of the great estate itself.

Writers, historians and thinkers will bring these themes vividly to life inside the house, culminating in a cabaret-style operatic finale in the staggering, Mughal-style Marble Hall.

A rich and varied day, shaped by the history of one remarkable family and the enduring questions it raises.
