Particular congratulations to Paddock Leach Poll Dorsets for a great day especially with their high index female Paddock Leach Ida and also to the Southbank Dorsets and Huish Flock flock with their genetics featuring via the Sandy Lane Flock.

Well done all!

A message for flocks across England and Wales in particular at this time from Adam Care, Association Chairman

A message from Chairman Adam Care:

With the current severe blue tongue outbreak in parts of the country, as a society, we just wanted to show support to any members going through a tough time with the disease and remind others to be vigilant for any of the early symptoms. Contact your vets, who can offer all the up-to-date information to best help you. This, coupled with the awful drought that much of the country is experiencing, is testing the best of us, so you're not alone.
The virus will pass, and the rain will come, so stay positive and keep doing your best. Plenty of support is available from fellow breeders and farmers experiencing the same problems you are.

Ram of the Month- this time something different, a nomination in from a non member.

Prospect Firecracker has been put forward by Martin Yeates (WE Yeates and Son, Swyre Flock), bred by Emily and Adam Smith, Swanage

Bought as a ram lamb from the Prospect flock, this top 1% was purchased to complement the team of high index Dorset rams being used on their 1100 commercial Dorsets. Other rams in the team come from the Blackhill, Huish, Poorton, Prospect and Woodburn flocks. The Swyre flock lambs three times in two years, aiming to produce high numbers of finished lambs for sale on supermarket contracts.

Martin says, "Prospect Firecracker, son of Huish Domino, has good feet, a tidy mouth and strong conformation. His figures show him bringing speed of growth and good muscling to his offspring. Additionally, he has a positive fat score. This is considered an important trait for his daughters who need to hold (and regain) their condition rapidly between lambing’s that occur every 8 months. We like to choose well put together, high index Dorset rams with the aim of producing ever better females for the flock."

"Purchasing suitable breeding stock has accelerated the genetic improvements within the flock. We are all in the business of producing quality food as efficiently as possible and genetic gain is one of the keys to this"
