Being Human 2019 in Sunderland
We are approaching this year’s theme ‘Discoveries and Secrets’ through the lens of local and regional history. We are looking at the way in which using local history can help uncover the place of the city in wider national and international history. We want to encourage members of the public to discover the history of the local area.
Focusing on the history of the North East, and on Sunderland in particular, our events aim to encourage people to unearth and to share knowledge. From the role of Sunderland in the Anglo-Saxon world to its part in the rise of women’s rights, Sunderland has a rich history that connects it to wider changes. We want to explore this year’s theme ‘Discoveries and Secrets’ in a series of events that encourage people to discover lesser known aspects of local history.
Research in the humanities at the University of Sunderland encompasses a wide range of aspects from Anglo-Saxon history, to cultural and intellectual life in the early modern period, to women’s rights to political philosophy. We want to encourage people to engage with this varied research and to promote the way in which it can enlighten the history of the local area and its links to wider national and international changes.
