🤠 THE BADLANDS CONVOY: CROSSING OPTIONS TO SAD HILL!

Listen up, Posse! For the upcoming trek to the iconic Sad Hill Cemetery near Burgos, a few of you might want to drive down through France rather than taking the direct cruise-ferry straight to Spain.

ALSO - DOG CABINS ARE SOLD OUT FOR THE UK-SPAIN FERRY!

If you want to skip the direct boat, we’ve crunched the numbers to find the best alternatives that balance cheapest tickets, quickest sea crossings, and keeping French toll costs at an absolute ZERO.

Here is how the options stack up for your rigs:

🚢 Option 1: Portsmouth ➔ Santander (The Direct Cruise)
For those who want to kick back, save the vehicle mileage, and arrive fresh.

Time on the water: 28–32 hours

Ferry Cost (Approx): £600 – £950+ (Depending on cabin and rig size)

Tolls: £0

The Vibe: Relaxed, zero road fatigue, but a premium price tag.

🚗 Option 2: Newhaven ➔ Dieppe (The Smart Overland Choice)
The sweet spot for the France route. Bypasses northern traffic and saves major mileage.

Time on the water: 4 hours

Driving distance through France: ~585 miles

Ferry Cost (Approx): £190 – £290 (A massive saving on the direct boat)

Tolls: £0 (If you follow our specific toll-free N10 route!)

The Vibe: Saves you ~90 miles of driving compared to Dunkirk, saving fuel and wear on heavy rigs.

🚙 Option 3: Dover ➔ Dunkirk (The Ultimate Budget Slog)
For the hardcore road-trippers wanting the absolute cheapest ticket across the water.

Time on the water: 2 hours

Driving distance through France: ~675 miles

Ferry Cost (Approx): £150 – £200

Tolls: £0 (Via the same toll-free route)

The Vibe: The cheapest way onto the continent, but puts the most hard yards on your clock.

🛑 TOLL-FREE NOTICE: If you are driving through France, there's a route using the dual-carriageway N10 that bypasses Paris and avoids French tolls completely. There'll be other convoy members going that way, and you'll be in touch via The Desert Stars WhatsApp Group, and still have the 24hr support line!

VERY USEFUL INFO about COSTS for The UK to SPAIN CAMPERVAN CONVOY!

Here's how much you need for The Starlight Express Convoy, UK - Spain Oct 2026:

Your main cost is the FERRY (below pic) Portsmouth to Santander, which is the biggie!

FUEL: the Badlands El Camino Route is around 500 miles each way you'll have to work out how much that is for your particular vehicle (about £200 total for a loaded campervan).

CAMPING: average £15 or less per night.

The convoy is over 8 NIGHTS (5th- 13th Oct.) from Sad Hill Cemetery, to The TREASURE HUNT on the wild shores of Almeria.

Pre-convoy meet up (4th Oct) in a village in Rioja during harvest - FREE (the mayor has invited us!!)

Your Badlands Convoy Ticket: £200 or £300.
Covers your convoy membership, with THE ROAD BOOK. Handpicked campsites and a GPS guided route with stops made to maximise a variety of views and natural wonders, in the shortest mileage, SUPPORT - 24hr bilingual helpline, Musicians and stunt performers in the evenings... and then there's the cameraderie of being in a convoy, now that's special 😃

PLEASE NOTE - the Ferry to France is cheaper and quicker, however the journey down is very long and expensive (French Toll roads are harsh!) although that is an option some are taking, most will be on the crossing departing Friday 2nd Oct to Santander. We don't want to waste very precious time or fuel, so yup, straight off the ferry and into the jaw dropping beauty (and sunshine!!) of Spain - Yeehaw!!! 😃🌟🤠
