Throughout this week we're shining a light on the volunteers who help make our region a great place to live by giving their time and energy to others.

One of those volunteers is Claire Marchbank, who leads an after school Netball Club at her local primary school. When the club stopped due to a lack of volunteers, Claire stepped in, completed netball training and brought it back, even though the sport was new to her.

Thanks to her commitment, more pupils than ever are taking part, including both girls and boys, and the school is once again entering teams into local netball festivals.

As Claire says:
“I am impressed with the motivation and progress the pupils have made. It is attracting boys as well as girls and I really enjoy taking the club."

Thank you, Claire, for helping young people stay active and confident

Volunteer Spotlight: Callan ⚽

Callan is a young volunteer making a big difference through a weekly breakfast club at Penninghame Primary.

Every week, he leads football sessions for over 30 pupils, helping them start the day active, confident and ready to learn.👏

Callan’s energy and enthusiasm have helped engage pupils who don’t always take part in other activities, making sport fun and accessible for everyone.
He says he loves giving back to his community and putting smiles on young people’s faces 💙

Thank you, Callan, for your dedication!

Douglas-Ewart High School YOUNG AMBASSADOR APPLICATION 2026

The Role of the Young Ambassador

At the heart of the Young Ambassador programme is the principle that their views, and those of other young people are heard, valued and influence decision making; and that they are engaged in driving change. The key role of the Young Ambassador is to motivate and inspire other young people to participate in sport and physical activity. This involves inspiring pupils aged 5-18 to participate in PE, school sport, extracurricular activities and local activity clubs. Young Ambassadors have a pivotal role within their school and wider community; they are advocates, role models and leaders of other young people.

Young Ambassadors will be supported by their Active Schools and Community Sport Officer and their secondary school to achieve the aims below. The aims are split up into two areas, with examples given regarding how these aims can be fulfilled.

As part of Volunteers' Week, we’re celebrating Morgan, who has been running an after school rugby club at St Joseph’s College for four years. 🏉

Morgan brings experience from playing and coaching around the world and uses that to inspire young people to get involved, build confidence and develop their skills.
He also supports school teams at events and links with Dumfries Saints to create more opportunities for pupils.

This year has included some amazing achievements, including a national schools trophy win, growing participation and the return of girls’ rugby 👏

Thank you, Morgan, for your commitment and passion for developing young people

It's Volunteers' Week, and over the course of the week we will be highlighting examples of outstanding volunteers who support the work of Active Schools and Community Sport and who make a real difference to their communities. First up, it's Ava Vickers, a volunteer netball coach and umpire.

Ava has made an outstanding contribution to sport in her local community through her volunteering with Active Schools. As a volunteer netball coach and umpire, Ava has given over 500 hours of her time to support school clubs, competitions and a wide range of activities across the physical education and sport calendar. Her commitment has helped ensure that many events could take place, providing opportunities for children and young people to get involved in sport.

Through her volunteering, Ava has supported hundreds of children to develop new skills, stay active and enjoy taking part in sport. Her dedication has had a direct impact on increasing participation and creating positive experiences for young people. During her time as a volunteer, Ava has also developed her own confidence, along with strong communication and organisational skills.

Ava’s contribution highlights the vital role volunteers play in making sport accessible and inclusive within local communities.
