Scarpa Great Lakeland 3Day

Scarpa Great Lakeland 3Day The GL3D™ is a friendly but adventurous, supported 3-day mountain journey held in the Lake District All participants still share the same overnight camp.

The GL3D™ is an adventurous three-day mountain marathon with a unique, relaxed and friendly atmosphere that attracts both runners and long-distance walkers. Over the years the event has built up a dedicated following of participants who enjoy the challenge of three long, consecutive days in the hills. We start and finish in the same location and so that participants can get maximum enjoyment, we t

ransport their overnight equipment between each camp. Participants can choose from either the Expert, Wainwright, or Café course. Participants simply enter the event, and then choose whichever course they prefer on the day e.g. Wainwright for all three days, Wainwright then Café on day 2, or any ‘mix-and-match’ combination. The Café Course is specifically aimed at experienced walkers and slower runners. Rather than complex navigation, the emphasis is on long mountain journeys, spectacular scenery and enjoying an amazing mountain experience. Participants should expect mostly mountain trails and footpaths, along ridges and through valleys, rather than contouring, bee-lining and bogs. Participants should be prepared for 6 to 9 hours on the hill each day, be competent mountain runners or walkers with the ability to navigate and be totally self-reliant. The first day is generally a little longer and the last day a little shorter. The friendly nature of the GL3D™ means that many solo participants join into informal groups to share each day on the hill. Although some participants race, there are no prizes, just the respect of your peers for finishing! The relaxed atmosphere of the event is best summed up in the flexible starting arrangements; each morning participants simply pack up their kit (which is then transported) and set off between 0700 and 0900. The faster participants start last, whilst the slower participants start earlier. Free hot water is available both mornings and evenings and a complimentary cake and hot drink (and optional beer) at the end of each day's running... it is usually well deserved! The GL3D™ always takes place on the first Bank Holiday weekend of May and usually enjoys fantastic weather.

📣 Great Lakeland 3 Day will be taking a rest year in 2026

The GL3D team have decided to press pause in 2026 to give the team some time to reflect on its next steps and the future of the event! 🤔

After a number of memorable years, the event has reached a natural crossroads ↔️

One path leading it’s way down towards a more expanded festival type experience appealing to a broader audience ✌️whilst the other back to it’s grass roots 🌱 - a simpler more self-sufficient offering more synonymous with traditional mountain marathons ⛰️

We have decided to take a step back rather than rush into any decisions and giving us - and perhaps others - the opportunity to reimagine the event with clarity and purpose! 🙌

❗️For those of you with deferrals, don’t worry! The customer services team will be in touch soon with your options 📧

We’d like to thank you all for being part of the amazing journey so far! 🙏 As always we could not do these events without your support!

We’d also like to thank our sponsors Scarpa who have been an integral part of the event for a number of years.

We will be sure to keep you updated of plans in the future and the next chapter for this incredible event!

Until then happy running 🏃🏽‍♂️ 🏃🏼‍♀️ !

Congratulations to Tom Hollins who did the Adventure course and completed a the entire 2025 SCARPA Great Lakeland 3Day map! He managed to hit all 47 checkpoints over the 3 days, 23 of these checkpoint summits were Wainwrights, a route totalling;
🗻 124km
🗻7,700m ascent
🗻 24 hours 15 minutes of moving time

The adventure course has been available to do since 2023, Tom is only the 3rd person to complete a map in those 3 years. Unlike the other linear courses, the adventure course has no defined route and is not provided any GPX assistance. Participants choose their own route, which requires expert mountain navigation, route planning, and self management.

Whilst Tom was taking part in our 3 day event absolutely crushing the entire GL3D map for this years race, he came and spoke to Shane as well as a packed tent full of runners about his recent self supported Wainwright FKT.

Tom shattered the previous record as he finished in eight days, nine hours, 44 minutes and 57 seconds!

Well done Tom! Who can take this feat on for 2026?

Choose your own adventure!
Some of our favourite shots of today’s routes.

One of the most treasured components of the SCARPA GL3D® is that participants simply enter the event, and then choose whichever course they prefer on the day.

This could be the Wainwright course for all three days, or for instance Wainwright on day 1, Herdwick on day 2, and so on with any ‘mix-and-match’ combination possible.

Hot weather kit activated! ☀️

Event Forecast🕶️🌅
It has been a remarkably hot start to the year. Although the weather forecast for the weekend cooled, it will likely remain unusually hot, with a high-pressure system dominating. This will likely lead to very warm conditions on the fells, particularly on Saturday, before cooler weather encroaches from the north. An up-to-date MWIS forecast will be available at the Info Point each day.

☀️Advice☀️
Overall, we expect this to be a fantastic weekend for running and walking in the Lakeland Fells. Still, Saturday may feel uncomfortably warm for some participants, especially those who choose to run hard or are not used to warm weather. We strongly advise anyone feeling uncomfortably hot to slow down and reduce their effort level. Due to the sustained period of unseasonably warm and dry weather, even the high fells are dry, and natural water sources are limited. Therefore, we strongly suggest that participants look at their planned route, consider how long it’ll take them, where they might obtain additional water, and carry an appropriate amount of water. Sunblock is advised. A sun cap/hat is mandatory, and we recommend carrying an extra 1L of water.

☀️Mandatory Kit☀️
The following rules will be in force during the event. We reserve the right to change these rules should the weather forecast dramatically change:

• Hot Weather Kit – Carrying this additional equipment with you in your hill bag will be mandatory.
• Cold Weather Kit – This must be in your Dry Bag for the duration of the event, and may be required.

☀️Kit Checks and Questions☀️
Each day, there will be a kit check before the start. You will be unable to start if you fail a kit check. If you have any questions or uncertainties about your clothing and equipment, please contact us ASAP, and we’ll be happy to advise you.

See you at the event!!!
