Well this was Made of Stone last year (2025). Great turn out, lovely weather. Were you there? And will you be back?

Paul and I were out checking some of the gravel sectors and feed station locations for Made of Stone yesterday.

Most of the day was exactly what we hoped for:

✔️ great gravel
✔️ quiet roads
✔️ route progress

Then we decided to try a new off-road section that looked promising on the map...

A few hundred metres later:

❌ mud
❌ nettles
❌ hike-a-bike
❌ regret

Safe to say that one probably won't be making the final route.

That's part of building these routes though — finding the balance between adventure and complete chaos 😅

Who's had a route idea that looked amazing on the map and turned into a terrible decision in real life?

Messed about on the gravel a bit today checking out sections of the route for Made of Stone
Thanks to big boss Paul from PAU joining me and making me laugh!

A good day of:
✔️ testing sectors
✔️ checking feed station locations
✔️ linking up sections of the route
✔️ reminding ourselves why gravel riding is more adventurous than road riding

We also tried to include a new off-road section that looked promising on the map…

A few hundred metres later:
❌ waist-high nettles
❌ hike-a-bike
❌ general suffering

Safe to say that one probably won’t be making the final route.

That’s part of the process though — finding the roads and sectors that feel challenging, rewarding and rideable without tipping fully into chaos.

The gravel route is shaping up really nicely now.

Spent this morning riding the middle bit of the Made of Stone ride route. Lots of fun on the gravel, a few nettle stings and some route changes to make before the big day on 28th June. Watch this space for more!
