“Absolutely brilliant.”

Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews is over for another year and we’re looking back on just one of the highlights from this year’s festival.

Renowned film composer Craig Armstrong. treated us to reflections on his career and his approach to creating film scores, before St Andrews music scholars and associate teachers performed three stunning pieces of his work from Far from the Madding Crowd, Moulin Rouge! and World Trade Center.

It’s already a week since began with an engaging and thought-provoking academic and industry conference, kicking off an incredible weekend of film and discussion that celebrated storytelling in all its forms.

Our director Ania Trzebiatowska spoke to Deadline, reflecting on the milestone fifth edition of the festival.

“This year feels like a real step forward for Sands,” she said. “We’ve seen audiences not only return but engage more deeply with the programme – reflected in a significant increase in box office income and a real sense of trust in what we’re building here.”

Thanks to Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews founding sponsors the Russo Brothers, the University of St Andrews’ Department of Film Studies is offering a Russo Brothers Scholarship to an MLitt student joining the Film Studies programme for the academic year 2026-2027.

Applicants must be applying for a full-time MLitt course due to start in September 2026.

Applicants can apply to either of the two Mlitt courses offered in the Department of Film Studies, the MLitt in Film Studies or the International Masters in Audiovisual and Cinema Studies (IMACS).

The Russo Brothers Scholarship offers the successful applicant £7,500 towards tuition fees in the Film Studies Mlitt programmes during the coming academic year.
