To perfrom Kathakali in Dorchester and Liverpool brought this incredible art form into two unforgettable communities. In Liverpool, the home of The Beatles, it was impossible to forget how they changed the world through their music and a message of peace and non-violence.

KATHAKALI MAKES HISTORY.
When Kalamandalam Vijayakumar made the decission to adapt the unforgettable melodies of the legend G Devarajan Master, the superb poetry of Vayalar, and P Bhaskaran Master, into classical Kathakali, a new door opened. BY Beautifully sang by Sadanam Jyothish Babu, Chenda Sadanam Ramakrishnan, Madalam Kalamandalam Aneesh. and slogam

This emotional play reflects the tragic murder of innocent men in Kashmir last year, how a young woman, just married, and enjoying her honeymoon, had to whitnesses the horror of her husband being shot in front of her. The unimaginable pain of all the victims is held in the depth of this Kathakali story.

PEACE
Created, and performed, by Kathakali actor, Kalamandalam Vijayakumar, the saddness that this woman endured is a powerful reminder that violence, of any kind, has no place in a caring society.

What happened in Liverpool and Dorchester was astounding. The audiences were spellbound, including the children, who sat totally focused for the 50 minute solo performance, many were crying, with emotion at what they had experienced.

This very moving event, promoted by the Liverpool Malayali Hindu Samajam, and Dorchester Arts, was unforgettable and placed Kathakali deep into it`s ancient storytelling tradition that highlights the eternal battle between good and evil.

Kathakali returns to the UK - Autumn 2026.

Please join us for an afternoon of Kathakali featuring a powerful and emotional new story - One more smile.

Comments from Adwaita Arts after the solo Kathakali performance in BRISTOL - 1st March 2026.

"An extraordinary Kathakali performance by Kalamandalam Vijayakumar was presented at SreeRaagam โ€“ Season 3, the Festival of Indian Arts and Music, on 1 March 2026 in Bristol, United Kingdom organised by Adwaita Arts in Association with Hengrove Malayali Community - HMC supported by Arts Council England and the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company.
This deeply moving presentation was inspired by the real events following the horrific Pahalgam attack. The story, titled *โ€œOnnu Chirikkoo Orikkal Koodi,โ€* was performed for the first time outside India.
The performance was enriched by the beautiful melodies of Malayalam poets P. Bhaskaran and Vayalar Ramavarma, set to music by renowned composer G. Devarajan.
Presented under the โ€œDevaraga Padangalโ€ segment, the story created powerful momentum and reflected a contemporary evolution in storytelling within Kathakali.
This remarkable 50-minute solo performance stands out as one of the most memorable Kathakali presentations in recent history.
The makeup for this performance was done by Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar worldโ€™s first female Kathakali chutti (traditional makeup) artist from Kerala Kalamandalam
Kalamandalam Vijayakumar 's performance was truly extraordinary.
