Back in the 18th century, engineer James Watt was trying to sell his new steam engines to breweries and mines. His biggest problem? His customers only understood power in terms of horses!

To convince them to upgrade to steam, Watt calculated how much coal a pony could pull up a mine shaft in a minute, increased the number to represent a heavy draft horse, and coined the term "Horsepower" to prove exactly how many horses his machines could replace. The name stuck forever!

Photo Competition 📸

Following the roaring success at last year's rally, our Photography Competition is back!

We invite all visitors of our 2026 Rally to bring up to four of their favourite printed photographs, taken at a previous Society Rally, to the opening day at Onslow Park, Shrewsbury.

Photographs can be entered at the Society's Memorabilia Marquee between 9:00am and 1:00pm on Sunday 30 August. Judging will take place at 2:00pm on the same day.

Michael Llewellyn, Society Archivist, said:

"We are inviting visitors to bring their favourite photographs to the Society's Memorabilia Marquee. We look forward to seeing images of the many attractions that have formed part of the Rally over the years. The photographs will be displayed throughout the two-day family event."

Alternatively, entries may be submitted by email to [email protected]. Please include your name, age, and contact details with your submission.

Closing date for email entries: 16 August.

The winning adult entries will be judged by a panel of professional photographers from the Committee and will receive a prize.

Always a firm supporter of Shrewsbury Steam Rally, now Eyes of a Penguin is going to be entertaining us at 7.30pm this coming Friday, 26th Jan, at the C**k Inn, Hanwood SY5 8LY, just outside of Shrewsbury.

I'm busy this week preparing for my first club talk in many years!

I'm heading over to The County of Salop Steam Engine Society to do a talk this Friday for one of their winter socials. I'll be showing off some of my favourite photos from the last 10 years and talking about them and some of the adventures involved in taking them.

The meetings are held at The C**k Inn, Hanwood. which is on the A488, about a mile or so off the A5 at Shrewsbury, Shropshire - the postcode for the pub is SY5 8LY.

The meeting starts at 7:30PM and all are welcome, member or not.
