🔬 How do we make thousands of plastic tokens that all look the same?

It's a question you might not have thought about when picking up a token at a school, festival or event.

But there's quite a bit of engineering involved!

With Swansea Science Festival taking place this weekend, we're taking a closer look at something we do every day here in Sheffield.

Our tokens are manufactured using injection moulding, but producing them consistently involves much more than simply pressing a button.

⚙️ Precision tooling determines the shape, size and design of each token.

🌡️ Temperature control helps ensure the plastic flows correctly.

⏱️ Pressure and timing influence how the mould fills and how the material cools.

🔎 Quality checks help us spot anything that hasn't formed as it should.

And because the same mould can be used repeatedly, we can manufacture thousands of tokens with the same design and dimensions.

Of course, machines don't always behave perfectly (something we know only too well! 😂), which is why keeping everything running consistently is such an important part of manufacturing.

It's a lot of engineering for something that fits in the palm of your hand.

♻️ Could you use the same event tokens next year? And the year after that?

With National Reuse Day taking place this month, we've been thinking about something event organisers might not always consider when ordering custom tokens.

What happens to them when the event is over?

Plastic tokens are durable, which means they can potentially be used again and again. But whether you can reuse them often comes down to the design you choose in the first place.

For example...

📅 A token printed with Summer Festival 2027 might not be much use in 2028.

🍹 A token saying One Drink could work across several different events.

⭐ A token featuring your business logo could be used for future promotions, parties and special occasions.

And if you're using standard token values or designs, you might not need something bespoke at all.

Of course, reuse also means thinking about how tokens will be collected, counted and stored, and making sure any outstanding customer entitlements are honoured.

But with a little forward planning, the tokens you order for one event could continue working for you long after it's finished.

By this point, they've been manufactured here in Sheffield, counted, bagged and prepared for your order.

Then it's time to pack everything up ready for collection.

🚚 Your parcel is collected by the relevant courier.

📍 Tracking information allows you to follow its progress.

⚡ Wands at the ready... it's Harry Potter Book Day!

This year's theme is Spells & Potions, so we couldn't resist turning it into a school House Cup challenge.

For one day, ordinary classroom activities could become something a little more magical.

🧪 A science experiment becomes Potions Class.

✨ Creative writing becomes spell-making.

📚 Reading becomes a wizarding quiz.

🔎 Problem-solving becomes a hunt for the missing potion ingredient.

Complete a challenge, earn points for your house and watch the totals build throughout the day.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be about who produces the "best" work. Points could recognise creativity, teamwork, effort, problem-solving and pupils simply having a go.
