🔎 For this week’s , we thought we’d answer a question you might have wondered about: why are we The Company of Cutlers in "Hallamshire" specifically?

Hallamshire was once the southernmost shire of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria, with its boundaries marked by the River Sheaf, Limb Brook and Meers Brook. By the 12th century, the town that grew around William de Lovetot’s castle at the confluence of the Don and Sheaf had become the capital of Hallamshire - the Sheffield we know today 🗺️

When the Company was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1624, it was given jurisdiction over the cutlery trades in Hallamshire and six miles around it. Interestingly, that historic geographical domain is still officially the Company’s area today, now more generally known as Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

So, our name isn’t just a title - it’s a link to the place and people at the heart of our 400-year history 💛

We’re delighted to announce that Ian Nicholls has been named Master Cutler Elect, alongside Victoria Clarke Brown CDir as Senior Warden Elect and Charles Turner MBE DL as Junior Warden Elect.

From the election of the new Master Cutler in September through to Installation in October and the progression of the Wardens, it’s a tradition that has evolved over more than 400 years.

🔎 This week’s shines a light on the history of our home here at Cutlers’ Hall...

Did you know today’s building is actually the third Cutlers’ Hall?

🏛️ First Hall | 1638-1725
Built on Church Lane for just £155, the first Hall was a stone building with a slate roof.

🏛️ Second Hall | 1725-1832
Built for £422, it eventually fell into disrepair, prompting the Company to resolve to build a new Hall.

🏛️ Third Hall | 1832-Present
Designed by Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor, the current Hall cost £10,000 to build.

The Hall has continued to evolve, with major extensions in 1867, 1888 and 1927, while the famous steel doors were added in 1964.

Today, Cutlers’ Hall is a Grade II* listed building and has been at the heart of Sheffield’s story for nearly 400 years⚔️
