Welcoming Luke Dale from to the lineup as a STOL Competition Pilot at the Popham STOL Competition on the 26th September 2026!

We asked him a little more about his aeroplane - here’s what he had to say:

G-BPUL is a 1953 Piper Super Cub, originally a PA-18-135A, built for agricultural work as a crop duster in Belgium. It still retains its original agricultural fuselage, with a different rear cockpit section. Following one of its later accidents, it was rebuilt using parts from an Italian PA-18-150, which is where its modified status comes from.

Today, BPUL is owned by a private syndicate, with the primary aim of offering glider towing to vintage gliders. So, from crop duster to glider tug, it’s had quite a life. At 73, she’s a classy yet independent old lady, and I thoroughly enjoy flying it.

I enjoy the character and the true stick-and-rudder flying that the Cub gives you. It makes you fly the aeroplane rather than simply operating it.

There’s also something about its presence on the ramp. That bright yellow paint turns heads, and you can’t help but smile when you see it sitting there even if some parts are a bit shabby sheek.

BPUL’s modified status comes from its rebuild following one of its crop-dusting accidents, when it gained parts from an Italian PA-18-150. Since then, it’s had a tow hook added, but not much else.

It doesn’t even have upgraded brakes, so expect some fairly long landing rolls! It’s a proper, honest aeroplane, and while it has the capability to operate from shorter strips, it hasn’t been turned into some heavily modified machine.

I love the stick-and-rudder flying. It’s like a Sunday driver: you can go almost anywhere, just not quickly.

Some people think it’s cool, while others just don’t get it. And that’s okay. For me, it’s the character, simplicity and feeling of actually flying the aeroplane that make it special. At 73, it’s a classy yet independent old aeroplane, and I enjoy every flight in it! 😃

Thanks to everyone who visited the STOL UK team members at the LAA Rally!

Ben and Ed had a great time meeting current and future STOL aircraft owners interested in competing in upcoming STOL UK competitions! Here’s a great pic of Ben from STOL UK and Matt from Farm Strip Flying who have recently partnered with STOL UK as the Official Training Partner.

Ahead of and during our competitions, the .co.uk and teams will work side by side on the pre-competition Competitor Evaluation, helping every entrant arrive prepared and confident.

Together we’re also developing a dedicated training programme for STOL (short take-off and landing) and backcountry flying for anyone keen to build new skills, or to sharpen up before they compete. Launching in the first quarter of 2027.

Both organisations share a firm commitment to safety both in competition and in everyday off-airport flying. We believe these programmes will help pilots fly better, and safer.

Now this is a first for the UK! We can’t wait to welcome Sam Whatmough and the only UK-based Slepcev Storch to Popham Airfields STOL Competition at the end of this month! (25th,26th and 27th September 2026)

We asked Sam a bit more about this incredible aircraft:

ā€œIt’s a 75% scale version of the Fieseler Storch which was used by the Luftwaffe in WW2 for liaison and reconnaissance. The Slepcev version has proved incredibly popular in outback Australia for sheep farmers!

My best fried and I bought it so that we could recreate ā€œThe Last Dogfightā€ at Airshows. Amazingly the last air to air combat in Wurope during WW2 was when an L4 Cub and a Storch engaged in a dogfight using hand pistols with the Cub successfully downing the Storch and the Cub’s pilot, Lt Duane Francis, being awarded the last ā€œkillā€. We recreate this amazing story!

The aircraft has incredible short field performance, with terrain being almost no barrier due to it not needing much terrain at all….I love its capability - as the Americans would say - ā€œyou can turn on a Dime and get a Nickel changeā€.

Pilots! There’s still time to enter this year’s competition at Popham Airfield! Express your interest by emailing [email protected]. šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

Backcountry and STOL at the 2026 LAA Rally!

If you’re flying a backcountry or STOL type into this year’s LAA Rally, we’ve got a spot for you. Join fellow STOL and backcountry aircraft parked together right by the show entrance, in ā€˜The STOL Line’— pride of place, easy to spot, easy to swap stories.

Getting marshalled in is simple: just place ā€œSTOLā€ on a piece of A4 in your window and the team will guide you across. Camping under the wing is available too, so you can make a proper weekend of it.

Come and say hello — Ben Inker and Ed Smiley-Jones will be there from STOL UK, alongside the Farm Strip Flying team.

Drop [email protected] a line to let us know you’re coming — it’s first come, first served, so don’t leave it too late. šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

Meet the team - Tom Holland - CEO

Twenty years as an airline pilot, most of them deep in flight operations. Tom Holland is a Senior Flight Operations Manager for a major UK airline, responsible for crew procedures, route network and operational safety across one of the country's newest jet fleets. He's flown as airline trainer and functional test pilot, and works with the CAA, FAA and EASA on flight safety and regulation.

That's the day job. The flying closest to him happens off the airfield: Tom flies many SEP types, but it's his own Mk4 Kitfox that takes him into the STOL world, where he also test-flies for the UK community. A committed champion of grass-roots aviation, he gives talks at universities and aviation societies to show people the sky is more within reach than they think.

At STOL UK, Tom sets the direction - leading the organisation and working with the team and wider community to grow STOL and backcountry flying across the UK. šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

The event UK backcountry pilots have been waiting for is finally here…in 2026!

This September 25th/26th/27th, STOL UK proudly hosts its inaugural competition at the historic Popham Airfield in the south of England. Renowned within the aviation community, Popham is the perfect venue, with the capacity to welcome hundreds of aircraft and pilots, for an unforgettable weekend of precision flying.

We’re excited to welcome pilots from across the UK and beyond to compete in the inaugural STOL UK competition. Flying is divided into classes, giving competitors the chance to showcase their precision and skill against others in their category.

Pilots wishing to compete should email [email protected] to register their interest. The official STOL UK rules and competition regulations will then be provided. It’s all about precision, performance and safely building your flying skills.

See you on the flight line this September at Popham Airfield.

Visiting aircraft should PPR as per normal operating procedures at Popham Airfield. STOL UK should only be contacted by pilots wishing to compete in this year’s competition. šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§
