If you happen to be in or near Fife, come and see our exhibition 'Making Waves - Breaking Ground' before it closes this Sunday 31/8 at 5pm.
This incredible diptych is by Finnish artist Santeri Tuori. In this series, Tuori photographs waterlilies in lakes over an extended period of time, layering multiple images that may be in black and white, in colour, or inverted into negative as seen here. The resulting work becomes abstracted, no longer a specific record of the original lake, but more the essence and memory of the place.

Our Making Waves - Breaking Ground selling exhibition is getting ready to re-open tomorrow, Saturday, 16th August at 10am.

After a wonderful response to the first few weeks of the show, we are looking forward to returning to with our unique exhibition that showcases the work of 11 international artists.

In Making Waves - Breaking Ground, the artists introduce elements of earth and water into their artistic processes in personal and often surprising ways. Across painting, drawing, photography and film, the artists are united in leading us to observe and re-evaluate these life giving elements and the impact they can have when abundant, or absent.

In collaboration with London-based Purdy Hicks Gallery - we are bringing an exceptional group of both Scottish and international artists, many of whom have never exhibited in Scotland before.

🗓Open 16th - 31st August, 10am - 5pm (closed Mondays).
📍Bowhouse, St Monans, Fife, KY10 2DB, Scotland

We look forward to welcoming you. All our welcome.

Please join us Saturday evening for an evening in conversation with artist

Samantha Clark will be in conversation with curator discussing how the dynamic natural environment in Orkney has shaped her work.

Clark’s recent work addresses place as something we are immersed in and involved with, rather than as something external we look at; not so much landscape as sky-sea-cloud-air-scape.

We are so looking forward to welcoming her Saturday evening as we sit amongst her work on display and for sale at Making Waves - Breaking Ground.

All are welcome.

🎙️ To reserve your free seat for the talk on 2 August at 6pm, please RSVP via email to: [email protected]
📍 Bowhouse, St Monans
🗓Exhibition currently open 19 July - 4 August 2025, a short break and then returning 16 - 31 August, 10am - 5pm

Please join us for our artist evening conversations.

This coming Sunday, we are delighted to have British artist joining us to discuss her large scale outdoor ‘land’ sculpture, and how living and working in remote areas of Scotland and the deserts of Syria, Libya and Namibia have formed her artistic processes.

Recently, Brook made ‘Tide Line’ on the Fife coast beside Cellardyke. ‘Tide Line’ is an invitation to walk in the intertidal space of the seabed made from surrounding stones.

“I respond directly to thelandscape and the materials it offers for me to work with. ‘Tide Line’ has a dynamic relationship with the incoming and outgoing tide and invites the viewer to walk onto
and along this intertidal space” - Julie Brook

It is well worth incorporating a visit to ‘Tide Line’ before the evening talk , as it is only a short distance away.

🎙️ To join for the talk on 27 July at 6pm, please RSVP via email to: [email protected]
📍 Bowhouse, St Monans
📅 Open from 19 July - 31 August 2025, with a short break from 6 - 15 August. Preview: 18 July, 6-8.30pm, all welcome.

Planning a visit to Making Waves; Breaking Ground? This group exhibition is now open at Bowhouse, St Monans. Join us Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm to experience works for sale by eleven international artists.

The ethereal images of Anaïs Tondeur are part of Making Waves; Breaking Ground. These images render visible the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl through photograms (sun prints) of radioactive plants and earth collected around the stricken site. Her ongoing series Chernobyl Herbarium references the history of photography but is very much located in the present, when ecological disruption is endemic.

In Making Waves; Breaking Ground, traditional concepts of landscape art are upended, reinforcing the urgency to rethink our relationship with the land and the evolving human connection to the natural world. Curated by Sophie Camu Lindsay in collaboration with Purdy Hicks Gallery.

Thank you to all who joined us for the preview and first day of Making Waves; Breaking Ground, a group exhibition curated by Sophie Camu in collaboration with Purdy Hicks Gallery, now open at Bowhouse. Open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm.

Included in Making Waves; Breaking Ground are Alexander Lindsay’s latest photographs. Ephemeral and yet hyper-detailed images of smoke particles, suspended and frozen in time and space, encourage a fresh observation and wonder at these natural phenomena. The patterns created in smoke and dust echo the movement of water changing course in a current, or the forms of nebulae in a galaxy - giving us pause for thought at the interconnectedness of nature and the rules that govern it.

Making Waves; Breaking Ground will present works by eleven international artists, each selected for their innovative explorations of nature, with a particular focus on the elements of earth or water. Curated by Space to Breathe in collaboration with Purdy Hicks Gallery, and opening this weekend at Bowhouse.

Photographs by Sandra Kantanen will feature, depicting a natural world in metamorphosis. In her practice, photography and painting unite to continually destabilise the eye. By mastering light’s most subtle photographic qualities and blending in alternative digital processes, she creates images that perfectly balance a meticulously crafted chaos of colour, distorting, blurring and brushing.

In Making Waves; Breaking Ground, traditional concepts of landscape art are upended, reinforcing the urgency to rethink our relationship with the land and the evolving human connection to the natural world through the works of 11 international artists. Opening this July at Bowhouse, St Monans.
