Introducing Pia Östlund.

Pia is a Swedish designer and printmaker based in London whose practice sits at the intersection of nature, archives, and printmaking history. Following a discovery at Chelsea Physic Garden, she revived a lost nineteenth-century method of nature printing, and her book Capturing Nature has since become the most extensive visual survey of nature printing to date.

For Land & Sea, Pia presents Sea of Love, a body of work inspired by a residency at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory in Sweden, where she immersed herself in the world of marine science and the threatened seaweed belts of the Koster Sea.

At its heart is the sea beech algae, a rare specimen collected by research boats that is transformed into print. Its intense crimson colour echoes Falu Rödfärg, the signature red of traditional Swedish cottages and, fittingly, the marine laboratory itself.

Pia’s work is on view at BOWHOUSE, as part of Land & Sea, opening 15 August in collaboration with Studies in Photography.

Introducing Paul Kenny.

Paul is a Newcastle-based artist and photographer with a practice spanning over fifty years. His work is held in some of the world’s most significant collections including the V&A, the National Gallery of Scotland, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs.

His ongoing Seaworks series explores shorelines and the natural world, finding the awe-inspiring in what is easily passed by. Paul’s images evoke fragility, ecology, and transience, asking urgent questions about what remains of our natural world.

Paul’s work is on view at BOWHOUSE, as part of Land & Sea, opening 15 August in collaboration with Studies in Photography.

Introducing Walter Dalkeith

By exploring the aesthetic beauty in nature, Walter seeks to draw out the underlying emotions evoked within the natural world. It is not just the physical aspects that interest him, but the invisible and intangible energies associated with them that he hopes to engage in his work.

Ice formations is a set of 3 photographs taken during the winter of 2025 in the Moffat Hills. Each image is a bird’s-eye view of a frozen stream illuminating the fleeting, intricate beauty of the ice before it was reshaped and melted by the flowing waters below.

Walter’s work is on view at BOWHOUSE, as part of Land & Sea, opening 15 August in collaboration with Studies in Photography.

Introducing Angela Chalmers.

Angela is a British artist based in North Yorkshire whose cyanotype practice explores memory, femininity, and the traces left by women’s lives. Working without a camera, she transforms fabric, botanical forms, and everyday objects into poetic blue imprints that exist between past and present.

Her series The Stocking uses worn, laddered stockings to create intimate cyanotype photograms. Fragile fabric becomes both skin and scar, hovering between body and absence, speaking of intimacy, loss, and the complexities of feminine experience.

Angela’s work is on view at BOWHOUSE, as part of Land & Sea, opening 15 August in collaboration with .

Introducing Constanza Dessain, one of the artists featuring in Land & Sea.

Constanza is a visual artist and PhD researcher based in the south of Scotland whose practice explores ecological entanglement, environmental repair, and the flux of place through improvised printmaking and early photographic processes.

Her series Reabsorption was made while developing a wildflower meadow with The Tweed Meadow Project. Weeds pulled from the meadow to increase biodiversity are transformed into prints, their sap bleeding into light-sensitive chemicals to release an image of themselves. Both on the page and in the meadow.

Constanza’s work is on view at Studies in Photography Gallery, Edinburgh until 25 July, before expanding her works to BOWHOUSE, opening 15 August in collaboration with .
