St Ives Shanty Shout

St Ives Shanty Shout The festival name comes from the Cornish tradition of singing sessions in Pubs.

St Ives Shanty Shout started in 2016 with a small handful of groups singing in The Castle Inn. This proved to be very popular and many groups showed interest in coming to the next one so we had to do it again in 2017 and make it bigger. We now work with our Charity partner - The Edward Hain Centre (Charity Number: 1200936) - to bring the annual event to the town in late November each year. With sponsorship and support from local businesses we are able to invite Kimber's Men from Yorkshire, to sing at multiple venues in the town as well as the many groups from across Cornwall and the South West. Our venues are central and the Shanty groups come in a diverse range of sizes and styles. Whether you like your singers in Civvies, dressed as Sailors or even Pirates there should be something special for you.

All aboard for a fun new shanty venture: Shanty Kids! For the first time in our history, a group of kids will be taking part in the 2026 Shanty Shout Festival! So if there's a song-loving 5-to-10 year old in your family who might like to join - Read on...

We're collaborating in this with our charity partner, the Edward Hain Centre. Our Shanty Kid group will be taught the songs by pro shanty singer Jason Wilkinson aka Pilchard the Pirate to perform at St Ia's - St Ives Parish Church on Saturday, 21 November. Time tbc; probably between noon and 3.

Rehearsals at the EHC (one a month) begin in 12 days, 19th Aug. To sign up your kid, email [email protected]

ALL ABOARD! Shanty Kid Spaces are filling up! If you have children in the family aged 5-10 who love to sing, we'd love to hear from you for this fun collaboration with the St Ives Shanty Shout.

The aim: to teach the children traditional and folk songs to give them an appreciation of local heritage, as well as the sense of pride from performing together. Professional Shanty singer Pilchard the Pirate (aka Jason Wilkinson) is to be their coach.

Rehearsals at the Centre (one per month from August through October) will be followed by a dress rehearsal in November at a local care home. The grand finale: a concert at St Ia's Church as part of the 2026 Shanty Shout Festival!

Who has a potential SHANTY KID in their family?

We are collaborating with the St Ives Shanty Shout team to launch SHANTY KIDS: so we're looking for 15 (or more!) 5-to-10 year olds who love singing! The idea: for them to learn traditional Cornish see shanties to perform at Ia's-St Ives parish church as part of this year's Shanty Shout programme in November.

And who better to teach them than a pro Shanty singer? We've enlisted the lovely Jason Wilkinson, aka Pilchard the Pirate, to be their coach -and he's raring to go! (As are we.) Rehearsals will take place at the Centre about once a month from August to November, with a dress rehearsal at a local Care Home on November 18th and the performance at St Ia's on Saturday, Nov. 21st (times tba)

🔸 For more details (including provisional timetable), and how to enroll your Shanty Kid, see here: https://edwardhaincentre.org.uk/shanty-kids-2026/
🔸 Ready to sign up? Email [email protected]

We are very excited about this project and its potential to teach kids more about their local heritage as well as enjoying the benefits of teamwork and the satisfaction of performing - a lovely payoff at the end of a fun journey.
