🎵 A Baker’s Dozen 🎶

Thirteen minstrels gathered at The Roundhouse for last week’s Acoustic Thursday, making for another fine evening of music, friendship and a few surprises along the way.

It was Colin’s turn to get the evening underway with the three-song “soundcheck session”. The rest of us then settled into our usual two-song floor spots, with Neil, Jeff Jones, Tom and Lynda, and Chris following on.
Next came Phil, a visitor from Mold, making his first appearance at The Roundhouse, although he had previously joined us at The Feathers before lockdown. Phil treated us to some lovely self-penned songs, accompanying himself on electric piano.
Glyn soon had everyone joining in with her catchy a ca****la songs, while Penni wove her usual Penni magic into the room in her own inimitable style.

It was also great to welcome back Paul Mann, who returned with a fabulous set of songs. Could he become one of our new regulars? We certainly hope so.
Then we heard from Richard Ruthin, accompanied by Tom, followed by a little bit of Elvis from Jen, before Steve Jukes-Hughes took us up to raffle time.

After the break, our trusty random generator shuffled the list and drew Phil, Penni, Paul and Neil to perform one more song each, with Steve delivering a fine finale to round off the evening.

We look forward to this week’s Acoustic Thursday, starting at 8.00pm as usual, with doors open from 7.30pm.

🎵 A Perfect Ten 🎶
What a great evening that turned out to be!
We had ten performers on the night, and there was plenty of variety from start to finish. Steve Jukes-Hughes was on top form with his dazzling resonator guitar - dazzling in more ways than one 😎 - while Colin was kept busy not only with his own solo spots but also jumping in several times to accompany others on harmonica and cajón.
Joe Lyon was in a mellow Merseybeat mood, and our very own Mr Blues, Brian Peters, was back with a lively set in his own inimitable style.
As always, we love to welcome visitors, and we were delighted to have Paul Mann from Llanarmon making his AllStyles debut.

There were also several musical tributes during the evening. Jeff Jones performed a song in tribute to Dolly Parton, while Pete and Cath paid tribute to Glen Hansard with a lovely version of “Falling Slowly” from his Oscar-winning film Once.
Chris followed this with the moving song “I Can See God”, which was sung by Glen’s brother, Gary Hansard, at Glen’s funeral earlier this month.

What a year it has been for losses in the world of music, with names including Neil Sedaka, Country Joe McDonald, Bonnie Tyler, Glen Hansard, Dolly Parton and Tim Curry among those sadly remembered. Most had enjoyed long lives and remarkable careers, but Glen Hansard’s death in a motorcycle accident at the age of just 56 felt especially cruel.
We have also heard the sad news of the passing of Merseyside folk singer Gerry Ffrench, who will be much missed at venues around Cheshire, the Wirral and beyond.

Despite the sadness behind some of the tributes, the evening itself was wonderfully upbeat, full of fantastic music and warm company. It all came to a head in the finale, when half a dozen performers joined Neil Martin for a lively jam-session version of “Call Me the Breeze.”

🎵 Let’s Get Back to the Music 🎶

We had just nine performers last Thursday. Don’t get me wrong - it was still a great night, and we are always hugely grateful to the regulars, both musicians and faithful audience members, who turn up week after week.

But there’s no denying that the real magic happens when the room starts to fill, creating that warm, friendly atmosphere that makes Ruthin AllStyles so special. And, of course, with only a dozen or so through the door, we don’t quite cover the cost of the room hire.
So don’t spend Thursday evening on the sofa. Come down to The Roundhouse and support the wonderful local acoustic talent that makes Ruthin AllStyles what it is. It’s the perfect cosy midweek night out.

🆒 It’s Cool to Be Cool 😎

We never stopped being cool at Ruthin AllStyles - in the trendy sense of the word, of course. For the past two Thursdays, however, our room at The Roundhouse was anything but cool, which is why we decided to take a break while waiting for the weather to do the same.

Numbers are usually a little lower during the summer months anyway, but this year’s successive heatwaves have certainly helped keep people off the streets. Maybe we should start having a short summer recess, as Wrexham and a few other folk clubs do?

Anyway, that’s a discussion for another time. For now, the weather is more temperate and, I don’t know about you, but I’m itching to get back to enjoying our Thursday Music Nights.

So we’ll be back at The Roundhouse this Thursday, 20th August, and we look forward to seeing a good turnout ready for our 8.00pm start. Doors open at 7.30pm, as usual.

👉NO MUSIC CLUB THIS WEEK (Aug 13th)

Uh-Oh, Here We Go Again! 🌵
☀️With the August heatwave expected to peak on Thursday, and temperatures predicted to reach well into the 30s, we have reluctantly decided to cancel this week’s Music Club meeting.

As we found during the June and July heatwaves, the thought of a hot, sticky evening was enough to keep most people away. Add in the number of folk currently away on their summer holidays, and we’d likely be left with an almost empty room.

😎So, slap on the suncream, maybe swap the guitar for a barbecue this Thursday, and we’ll look forward to seeing you all back at The Roundhouse on Thursday 20th August.

THE WANDERER RETURNS - PLUS A NEW (hairy) FACE

We can’t really call him a “wandering minstrel”, because his guitar didn’t accompany him on his six weeks in Mongolia. Nevertheless, it was great to see Steve Jukes-Hughes back at the club — and even better to discover that the lack of practice hadn’t affected his finger-picking dexterity one bit.

🐶And the new hairy face?

No, it wasn’t another musician trying to challenge Neil and Colin in the best beard contest. It was Glyn’s new companion, Lucy.

Lucy did attempt to accompany Glyn at one stage — and almost upstaged her — but sadly declined an invitation to perform The Noisy Dog Symphony by Offen Bark!

🎵 A CACOPONY OF CROONERS 🧑‍🎤
…including the full band, visitors from exotic locations, and a pluck of players from our regular serenade brigade.

But first, let us address the elephant in the room: Birchall’s Senior Moment!
In fairness, it wasn’t just me. The last thing Jayne said as I set off for The Roundhouse was, “Don’t forget to announce there’s no club next week.” To be fair to Jayne, she’d been unwell, and thank you, by the way, to everyone who sent her good wishes. I, however, had no such excuse, apart from being a forgetful auld git.

So, just to set the record straight: there IS a music club this Thursday, 30th July. It is the following week, Thursday 6th August, when there will be no club gathering.

Other than that, the night went well. Really well, in fact, with fifteen performers in all. Joining our regular serenade brigade, we had the Tom, Dick & Harry band, complete with John on bass and Raphael on harmonica.

And what about those “exotic locations”, I hear you ask?
First, we welcomed Ben, a minstrel who found us while holidaying locally after landing here from Normandy. Ben commanded the stage with effortless European charisma, treating us to three songs accompanied by guitar.

Then came a pair of promenaders from the almost-as-exotic seaside town of Rhyl. 🤪Performing as a guitar-playing duo, Angela and Tim captivated us with their beautiful harmonies during their first set - and, having been drawn for the finale spot, soon had the audience joining in the choruses too.

So don’t forget: there is definitely another Singers’ Night this Thursday, and we look forward to seeing another good turnout ready for our 8.00pm start. Doors open at 7.30pm, as usual.

Last week we saw the July "heat" of the "Most hirsute chin" competition. To be fair, there were no winners or losers - in fact we were all winners having enjoyed a lovely evening of folk & acoustic music at The Ruthin Roundhouse. (aka Llanfwrog Community Centre).
I wonder what this Thursday will bring? Come along and join us at 7.30 (music starts at 8.00pm)

🎵 Nein Nein Fräulein 🎷

🎸 Well, that was the tally last Thursday... nine performers and eighteen in the room, but there was certainly no shortage of music.
Joe Lyon kicked things off with some Mersey sounds, while Chris was in a Dylan mood, but also included “It’s a Heartache” in tribute to Welsh songstress Bonnie Tyler, who sadly passed away a day or two earlier.
Glyn soon had everyone joining in with her a ca****la folk songs, and Penni treated us to some favourite “Penni songs”, including Sting’s sad but beautiful “The Empty Chair”.
After his own guitar spot, Colin was kept busy accompanying others on cajón throughout the evening, while Pete Red gave us a clutch of self-penned songs - including one inspired by a New Zealand trip where he swears he saw Elvis on Highway Five. He also insists he’d not been sampling the country’s “Blue Meanies” or Fly Agaric!
Pete had travelled in from Prestatyn, which might normally have earned him the long-distance award, had it not been for Andy LeFevre, a visitor from Essex holidaying in the area. Andy brought us some fine contemporary acoustic folk and storytelling songs, including “At Your Knee”, written about his grandmother, who died when he was just three.
Sam Moorcroft added a deliciously risqué Damien Rice number, before Neil Martin closed the evening - though we kept him on stage long enough to be joined by several others for a rousing finale, sending us all home with a guaranteed crowd-pleaser ringing in our ears.
It should still be warm this Thursday, though apparently not quite as warm, but we’ll get the big fan blowing in good time to cool the room ready for our 8.00pm start. Doors open at 7.30pm, as usual.
