900 years of history and this September, a new chapter begins!
Founded in 1121 by Henry I of England, Reading Abbey rapidly grew into one of medieval England’s most powerful and wealthy monasteries. For over four centuries it played host to royal ceremonies, parliamentary gatherings, and pilgrims from across the country.
Its fortunes changed in 1539 when Henry VIII ordered its dissolution during the Reformation, leaving much of the abbey dismantled and abandoned. In later years, the site was repurposed as a fort during the English Civil War before gradually falling into ruin.
Closed to the public in the early 2000s for safety reasons, the abbey underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 2018. Today, as a protected Grade I listed landmark, its ancient stone walls provide a powerful setting for Down at The Abbey where centuries of history meet contemporary culture.
