St Andrew’s Church, Portslade — Then & Now

The South Portslade Communituy Centre, orginally St Andrew’s Church has been part of the local community since 1864, when this area was still known as Copperas Gap — a small settlement growing rapidly with the arrival of the railway.

Inside the church are many stories from the past, including the Baddeley Windows, installed in memory of Lt. Alfred Baddeley, a young Portslade soldier killed in the First World War aged just 19. His brother Walter, who once taught Sunday School at St Andrew’s, later became a missionary bishop in Melanesia and eventually Bishop of Blackburn.

For more than 160 years, this building has been a place where the community gathers.
Soon this historic space will host a new chapter of community life:

🎨 Meet the Makers – Portslade
🗓 Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 March
⏰ 10am – 5pm

Local artists and makers will be sharing their work, demonstrating their crafts, and welcoming visitors to explore creativity up close.

If you grew up in Portslade, you’ve probably walked past this church hundreds of times.

What’s your earliest memory of it?

For our fantastic Spring event 🌸

We’re looking for friendly volunteers to help the PAM team bring Portslade Art Market to life!
The event takes place on March 28–29, at the South Portslade Community Centre (SPCC), Church Road, BN41 1LB, and we’d love your help in making it a great experience for everyone.
There will be lots of different roles to get involved in, volunteering is a lovely way to meet new people, support local creatives, and be part of our growing community.
No experience needed — just enthusiasm and a willingness to help.
