East Durham Miners Picnic
East Durham Miners picnic is a true community celebration event... The idea for the event is based upon the miners picnics that used to take place across the coalfields of East Durham in years gone by and is a way of connection the past to the present and the people to the amazing place we live in!
Kick-started with funding and support from The National Trust as part of the ‘The People’s Landscape Project’ in 2019, the event continues to have National Trust support and backing but has been taken on by a local team of creatives and community organisations with a passion and commitment to ensuring the past is celebrated and not forgotten and that the future is filled with positivity through events such as this.
A small working party are behind the festival bringing to the table their vast and varied skills in community development, event production, the arts and culture. The work year round to secure funding and put the plans in place to ensure this event can go ahead. All members of the working party have a true connection to and love of the area as local residents and with their families based here.
Annually on the former pit site in Easington Colliery East Durham Miners Picnic brings Easington residents and wider East Durham together to celebrate all that is great about the area... with a range of family friendly activities, live music, marching bands, banner parades, entertainment and a strong bias towards the arts, there really is something for everyone.
