Southern Fried Festival, Perth

Southern Fried Festival, Perth Scotland's world-class weekend festival of American roots music: country, gospel, rock'n'roll, blues

Based in Perth Concert Hall and venues throughout the city, this award-winning festival of American roots music takes place over a long weekend in late July. Southern Fried covers a wide range of musical styles including country, blues, bluegrass, gospel, soul, songwriters, alt.country and more. Plus free gigs, latenight performances, daytime shows and workshops.

“That a festival with the huge re

putation of Southern Fried exists in Scotland outside of either of the country’s two biggest cities is testament to just how much the four-day event has nailed what it does so perfectly.” The Courier

"Southern Fried continues to occupy its position as the best Americana and roots music festival in Scotland and perhaps the best of its kind in the UK...all adding up to four days of joyous music concentrated within the centre of one of Scotland’s most beautiful cities…definitely the jewel in the crown of Scotland’s festivals with its superlative mix of acts and venues.” Americana UK

"Southern Fried is a very special festival. The venues are superb – from a recently restored historic theatre, to a modern concert hall, to Scotland’s oldest established hotel (the Salutation), and an outdoor stage – all with great acoustics.” No Depression

Since the festival launched in 2008, artists have included Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Booker T Jones, The Mavericks, Rhiannon Giddens, Sturgill Simpson, Allen Toussaint, Loudon Wainwright III, Rosanne Cash, Nick Lowe, Seasick Steve, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Los Lobos, Imelda May, Punch Brothers, Nanci Griffith, Patty Griffin, Bettye LaVette, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Justin Townes Earle, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Gretchen Peters, Steve Cropper, Eddie Floyd, Fred Wesley, Raul Malo, Iris DeMent, The McCrary Sisters, The Fairfield Four, Mary Gauthier, Darrell Scott, Ruthie Foster, Anais Mitchell, Lera Lynn, Hayseed Dixie, Yola Carter, Sam Outlaw, Angaleena Presley, Jim Lauderdale, The Holmes Brothers, Jeb Loy Nichols, Willie Watson, Amythyst Kiah, Doug Seegers, Chris Smither, Paul Carrack, Andy Fairweather Low, Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express, John Fullbright, Della Mae, Elizabeth Cook, Slaid Cleaves, Tom Russell, Carrie Rodriguez, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Hot 8 Brass Band, Bill Kirchen, Stanton Moore, Diana Jones, Brennen Leigh & Noel McKay, Justin Currie, Samantha Crain, Eddi Reader, Karine Polwart, Cyndi Cain, Jason Ringenberg, Larkin Poe, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, Kris Drever, Dick Gaughan, Hamish Stuart, James Hunter, James Grant, Emma Pollock, Steve Gibbons, Rab Noakes, Ags Connolly, Danny Thompson, Blue Rose Code, Flats & Sharps, Lisa Mills, Dean Owens, Peter Bruntnell, Rick Redbeard, Roddy Hart, Rachel Harrington, Hannah Aldridge, High Plains Jamboree, Danni Nicholls, Robert Vincent, Meaghan Blanchard, Skip Gorman, Phil Lee, Jess & The Bandits and many more. We're absolutely delighted that Rhiannon Giddens will return to Perth Theatre and Concert Hall with Francesco Turrisi Music next April.

We've previously welcomed her for two famous Southern Fried appearances; with Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2010 and an unforgettable solo set as part of an amazing double bill with Punch Brothers in 2015.

We're absolutely devastated to learn of the tragic death of Red Pine Timber Co. founder and mainstay Gav Munro. He was a key figure and inspiration on the Perth music scene for decades as a member of many bands, studio owner and teacher. He shaped Red Pine into a uniquely powerful and popular live band who played many memorable Southern Fried shows over the years.
Gav will be hugely missed and all our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Hello everyone,

It’s been a long time since we had any news to share on what’s happening with the festival but finally we do.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s a mix of the good and the bad. The bad news is that we won’t be able to present a full weekend festival this summer.

The very good news is that we have put together a special one-day event on Sat 30th July when we’ll restage the fantastic Scotland Sings Nanci Griffith show we produced for Celtic Connections in January followed by a late show with Katie Whittaker Music and Errol Linton in Perth Theatre.

We know many of you are desperate to return to Perth for some great live music, to see old friends and make some new ones and we very much hope to see you on 30th July. Tickets are now onsale via the link below.

The Southern Fried Team

Scotland Sings Nanci Griffith is led by Musical Director Stuart Nisbet and features Kirsten Adamson, James Grant, Jill Jackson, Karen Matheson, Dean Owens Musician - Official, Lisa RigbyMusic and Emily Smith backed by an excellent band.

Sad to hear of the passing of a genuine country music legend, pianist Hargus "Pig" Robbins. He played on thousands of tracks including Charlie Rich’s Behind Closed Doors, The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter, She Thinks I Still Care by George Jones, Patsy Cline’s I Fall To Pieces and Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde album as well as more contemporary artists such as Bonnie Prince Billy and Ween.

We've posted one or two of our favourite tracks he played on below, what are yours?

Born on January 18, 1938 in Spring City, Tennessee, Hargus Marvin Robbins was rendered blind at the age of four due to an accident involving his father's knife. In those days, there were few occupations a blind boy could dream of, but one of them was playing...

What a devastating week with Nanci Griffith, Tom T Hall and Don Everly of The Everly Brothers all taking their leave of us.

The Everlys are of course best known for their harmony-laden hits of the late 50's and early 60's that had such an impact on The Beatles and so many others who'd go on to be massive artists in their own right.

Even then, their formative country background was still evident, and the late 60's and early 70's saw them make some great country-rock and bluegrass flavoured records before their famously tempestous relationship put a halt to their output. Here's one of our favourites from that era; written by John Prine, produced by Chet Atkins (who also played guitar) and sung by the Everlys - what's not to like?
