Pen*stone Arts Week PAW

I was honoured to paint this very personal piece as a gift from a husband to his wife.

They already have one of my tree paintings overlooking the valley at Thurlstone, and they particularly enjoy watching the geese as they fly across the landscape to land behind the Pennine Trail. So when I was asked to create a minimalist representation of that scene, I painted it in my usual ink and watercolour style on a 100 x 50cm canvas, keeping the palette monochromatic.

The painting was created using a combination of my own reference photographs and a beautiful image by Wendy Hodgkins Corniquet.

I hope it brings them the same sense of peace and connection to the valley that inspired it.

I’ve emailed those who have shown interest in creating art & craft for our Poppies With Purpose exhibition, 2-14 Nov in aid of RBL Poppy Appeal & St John’s Church Tower & Clock Restoration Appeal. It contains important details about the event. If you haven’t received an email and you are interested in taking part please contact me asap.

Also, if you’ve been kindly knitting/creating poppies to decorate the Church, please let me know how you’re getting on too. An update on approx numbers would be great. These will need to be dropped off at St John’s Church by Sunday 18th October. Thank you.

It is with sadness that we announce the winner of the 2026 En Plein Landscape Artist of the Year, has sadly passed away. Gary Mullin had seen our posts on social media and travelled all the way from Cheshire to take part. A talented artist, Gary’s rendition of St John’s Church was absolutely beautiful. RIP Gary.

Pen*stone Arts Week (PAW)’s lion cub, designed by competition winner Grace Ryan of St John’s Primary School, is now proudly on display in Tesco alongside the wonderful cubs created by Springvale School and Pen*stone Church FC.

Our cub, Nala, raised an incredible £950 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, matching the success of her sisters. Combined with this year’s £200 raffle donation to Pen*stone Gateway Club, a £50 donation from our annual Book Trail, and £750 raised by Pen*stone Arts Collective for the St John’s Church roof fund, PAW’s charitable giving this year reached an amazing £1,950.

When we add in the many other donations generated through events held at our fantastic hosts, St John’s Church, the total contribution is likely well in excess of £2,000. And with Poppies with Purpose coming in November, who knows what we can achieve next?
