Paignton Regatta

Paignton Regatta Paignton Regatta is a FREE nine day event that provides fun and entertainment for people of all ages. The 2020 event runs from the 8th - 16th of August.

Welcome to the 170th Paignton Regatta page! Our Committee is made up of a group of local enthusiastic volunteer individuals who work hard to provide nine days of free entertainment on the Paignton Green during the second week of August. Many years ago the Regatta week centred around the trials and tribulations of the various sporting disciplines including gig racing, hockey, football, cyc

ling, tennis and rowing to name but a few. Although one can still find some of these core
activities in the programme, we have moved on significantly and this year we intend to take a giant step forward with our new all day entertainment programme. This year our stage also comes alive in the evenings with our series of Regatta Rocks! events and I'm delighted to announce some fantastic headline tribute acts on the main stage including Little Mix, Take That!, and Neil Diamond, plus live music from great local rock band - Klassika. Of course, some time-honoured favourites are still on the programme, including the Bay’s biggest firework display. This year's fireworks will be on Friday 11th August at 9:30pm. Our jam-packed entertainment programme starts at 10am and finishes at 5:30pm every single day and I believe we must have the most varied programme of entertainment anywhere! You can pick up a free programme from outlets around Torbay and we will have plenty of copies at Regatta HQ on the Green. If you have a programme, you won't miss a thing! Whichever of our events you attend, I hope you and your whole family will have a super time. Enjoy Regatta and please remember that we are a charity and rely on your donations to keep going, so remember to put some coins in our collecting buckets !

**Paignton Regatta postponed until 2023**

Following two years where the Paignton Regatta could not take place due to Covid restrictions, we must regrettably announce that this year’s event will not take place.

Our committee has recently been hit by the passing of our longstanding chairman - Ken Robertson, who was an active organiser of our event, and the competing commitments of our remaining regular members mean that we do not have enough volunteers to run the event safely this year.

Our event is entirely organised and staffed by volunteers, who put in many hours of their time to put on the best free and inclusive event that we can. We are also acutely aware of the position of our fantastic sponsors to be able to continue supporting us after two years of reduced trading. However we are hopeful that 2022 will be a better year for them and allow us all to build back stronger for the future.

We hope our supporters understand our position and we wish the remaining events the very best of luck as they plan to return to the Paignton Green this Summer.

If you would like to join the committee, we would love to hear from you. We have roles for people from all backgrounds, ages and levels of time commitment. If you'd like to talk to someone about helping to organise and run our community event next year, please send us an email at [email protected]

Everybody at Paignton Regatta had a story about Bruce, one of the nicest men you could ever wish to meet, and it was good to share some of them at the harbour today as he stopped to look out over the water one last time. Can still hear him shouting across the Green: "Anybody got a plaster?" RIP Bruce

Today we said goodbye to Ken Robertson - the regatta's chairman, mentor, organiser, motivator, Honorary Keeper of the Adjustable Spanner and leader of the Early Morning Marquee Er****on Platoon for so many years. More than 200 cyclists followed Ken around the velopark on his Last Lap and we were proud to be there too. So long Ken, we won't half miss you. https://www.devonlive.com/news/devon-news/gallery/hundreds-ride-kens-last-lap-6479510

Statement from Paignton Regatta Committee
It is with enormous regret that the Paignton Regatta Committee have agreed to cancel their event for 2021.

The regatta would have been held in the first week of August and is a traditional seaside community event, based around the Regatta stage. The event has been running since 1847 and apart from a short break during the two world wars, it has taken place every year. The event was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Ken Robertson, the honorary Chairman of the committee said “We have been in constant communication with representatives of Torbay Council and at this time, we believe that some forms of restriction are likely to remain in place over the summer that will not make it viable to hold our event, both from the perspective of the additional costs that the event would need to cover and manpower that would be required to keep everyone safe.
Many businesses have been impacted during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our event is heavily reliant on sponsorship and runs on tight margins. We are not seeing the level of sponsorship being available to us that would enable us to operate. Our regular sponsors really want to continue to support us, but they are not in a position to help us out financially this year. However, given twelve months of normal trading conditions, they feel confident they will be able to be back onboard with financial support.
We understand that many people will be disappointed with our decision, however we are determined that Regatta will take place in 2022.”

Welcome to the 172nd Paignton Regatta Community Fun Week page!

It’s the 172ndPaignton Regatta and our Community Fun Week will be building on the hugely successful evenings of entertainment, whilst continuing our ethos of providing nine days full of FREE entertainment for all the family on Paignton Green.

Our event is run entirely by a small but dedicated band of local volunteers and all our events are funded through sponsorship, advertising, the support of our stallholders and the kind donations of the public who visit us during the week. Our event also supports and raises money for a number of charities and local good causes.

Regatta has always been a mix of the traditional and the new. We will be bringing back a number of our popular events this year and will have a brand-new layout on the green for you.
