Oxford Coffee Concerts Featuring some of the world’s finest chamber groups and solo performers, the Oxford Coffee Concert

North Oxfordshire-based musician Chris Windass founded the Oxford Coffee Concerts series in 1986 when he booked the Holywell Music Room for four Sunday morning appearances by his own chamber music group, the Adderbury Ensemble. While that first season attracted audiences of just 35 or fewer, Chris was encouraged enough by the enthusiasm of the people who did make it to those early concerts to put

on a second series. Happily, audience numbers started to grow as his group’s fame spread. The frequency of concerts soon increased from fortnightly to weekly and the Adderbury Ensemble’s recitals eventually had to be supplemented with appearances from other celebrated chamber music ensembles and soloists. From those relatively inauspicious beginnings, the Oxford Coffee Concerts series has now firmly established a place among the foremost chamber music events in the UK, if not the whole of Europe. These days, some 30 years on, Oxford Coffee Concerts audiences are still as loyal and enthusiastic as ever but are numerous enough to fill the Holywell to capacity nearly every week. As well as performances from the Adderbury Ensemble, internationally acclaimed artistes of the calibre of pianist Tom Poster, viola player Lawrence Power, violinist Andrew Haveron, the Schubert Ensemble and the Carducci String Quartet make regular appearances. The series sees performances too from some of the country’s finest up-and-coming soloists and groups. Oxford Coffee Concerts continue to take place on Sunday mornings throughout the year in the stunning setting of the Holywell Music Room, the oldest purpose-built concert venue in Europe. And every concert ticket still entitles the holder to a complimentary cup of coffee at the King’s Arms public house at the top of Holywell Street or the Vaults & Garden Café in the High Street. Check out the Oxford Coffee Concerts website for details of ticketing arrangements for the current season. The Oxford Coffee Concerts series is supported by the Coffee Concerts Trust, registered charity number 1095243. If you would like to join the trust’s patrons (listed here), please get in touch using the contact details on the website.

Next Sunday (May 17 at 11:15) we were due to host Roman Simovic, Milena Simovic and David Cohen. Unfortunately, their concert has had to be postponed until a later date due to Roman’s sustaining an injury to his hand that required surgery. The good news is that the Adderbury Ensemble have been able to step into the breach and will perform string quartets by Beethoven and F***y Mendelssohn. This Sunday April 12, 2026 at 11:15, we make our return after the Easter break to welcome back to the Holywell Hana Chang (violin) and Jonathan Ware (piano). Hana mades her Oxford Coffee Concerts debut with Jonathan just over a year ago to rapturous applause from the audience, and we have little doubt that the response will be much the same this time around too. On Sunday, the pair will be performing beautiful works by Lili Boulanger, Tōru Takemitsu, Olivier Messiaen and Camille Saint-Saëns. Full details here: https://coffeeconcerts.com/ -12

All the tickets for this Sunday morning’s Coffee Concert were snapped up very quickly. However, if you’re one of those who were unable to secure one, don’t despair. There’s almost always a number of “no shows” for every sold out concert. If reserved tickets remain unclaimed at 11:00 on the day, they’re allocated to people on our waiting list.

To get yourself on to the waiting list, please call 07518 479062 from 00:01 on Saturday morning (March 21). (Phoned applications before that time will not be accepted.) All applications from that time until 08:30 on Sunday morning will be listed in the order received but — since it’s first come, first served — the sooner you make the call, the more likely you are to get into the Holywell on the day.

You can also get yourself on to the waiting list if you come to the Holywell box office from 10:00 on Sunday morning but please be aware that` people who applied by phone will be given priority.

If you have applied to join the waiting list, you need to arrive at the Holywell box office by 11:00 on Sunday morning to find out whether returned tickets are available. Sorry, but we cannot guarantee that you will receive the tickets you want even if you are high up on the list.
