1773+ visitors, 150+ exhibitors, guest speakers including Richard Ovendon, Paterson Joseph and Andrey Kurkov and unlimited enthusiasm - a great day for independent publishing (and a big thank you to Lucy Group our headline sponsor) read on...
A wonderful morning at the Oxford Independent Book Fair, held in the University of Oxford’s magnificent Examination Schools. Both major halls were brimming with writers, illustrators, small publishers and book lovers – more than 150 exhibitors sharing stories, ideas and inspiration.
I had the honour of introducing the Bodleian’s Librarian, Richard Ovenden OBE, who opened the Fair. His work preserving knowledge – and his powerful book Burning the Books – was the perfect reminder of why places like this matter so deeply.
The whole building was buzzing: visitors queueing for signings, children lost in picture books, authors proudly talking readers through the journeys behind their stories, and a warm ripple of applause drifting from a reading nearby.
I was also pleased to learn more about the support from Lucy Group, whose sponsorship has helped the Fair grow and flourish. Their commitment to Oxfordshire’s creative and cultural life is hugely appreciated.
Events like OXIB show Oxford at its most inclusive and imaginative. They champion new voices, celebrate independent creativity and welcome readers of every age and background.
My thanks to the organisers, exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers for creating such a joyful, generous event. I left richer in ideas, poorer in cash – and utterly delighted.
