1 day to go… and here is your final teaser.

We are almost ready for Edwardian Evening 2025, and this photograph is a little clue for tomorrow. Do you recognise this spot in town?

Look closely at the arch, the detailing and the reflections. It is a place many of us pass every week without noticing. If you know it, tell us in the comments and see who else gets it right.

Whether you dress up or simply dress warm, the Okehampton community looks forward to welcoming you.

2 sleeps to go. A few practical tips before you head out:

✨ Dress warm
It’s looking like 5°C, so layer up. A raincoat is a good idea too, just in case.

✨ Stay warm while you wander
Pop into our independent shops between the entertainment, enjoy a browse, and warm up while supporting local at the same time.
There are also welcoming pubs and clean, central public toilets available throughout the evening.

✨ Bring a little change
You’ll see some brilliant charities out on the night; every bit of support helps.

✨ Want to dress up?
Edwardian outfits add a lovely touch, but they’re completely optional.
If you’d rather keep it simple, bring some festive lights or glow sticks; they add to the magic and help you stay visible.

✨ Come hungry
Street food, warm treats and seasonal drinks will be waiting for you.

✨ Don’t forget a bag for life
Perfect for filling with local goodies.

If you’ve ever wondered what Edwardian Evening feels like, here’s a preview for 2025…

As the daylight fades, the town begins to glow. From 4:30pm, the The Museum of Dartmoor Life opens its doors to little ones ready to get in line to meet Santa in his cosy grotto; the perfect gentle start before the streets fill with music, laughter and light.

By 6pm, the crowd gathers on Fore Street. From the Okehampton Round Table sleigh, the town Mayor leads the choir in a short service, voices rising just as the Christmas lights burst into life above the high street. It’s the moment everyone leans into: the collective ahh that marks the real start of the festive season.

You might wander into the Victorian Arcade and spot close-up street magician Jack Sterling, who'll be popping up around the town throughout the evening. Turn a corner, and you’ll hear WREN Music filling the air (6:30–7pm), followed later by the beautiful harmonies of Tim Sutton’s Choral Society (7:30–8pm), echoing down the high street.

From 6-7pm, look up; way up, and you’ll see Vicky Long Lady on stilts, drifting between Fore Street and Red Lion Yard as a character stepped out of a storybook.

And as the night deepens, a circus performer brings energy and colour between the High Street and Red Lion Yard (7:15–8:30), drawing audiences wherever they go.

Down in Red Lion Yard, the atmosphere shifts into something warm and communal. The area glows red for the evening, and the Okehampton Community Choir (7–7:30) fills the courtyard with familiar winter melodies. It’s a perfect spot to pause; with places to perch, eat, chat and soak up the magic.

Guiding you through it all is local legend Rob Pudner, bringing his signature spark as MC for the night.

And because no festive night is complete without something delicious, you’ll find the streets lined with comforting favourites: hog roast, crepes, fries, hot chestnuts, mulled wine, soup and cakes; everything you need to keep hands warm and spirits high.

This is Edwardian Evening: a night of music, surprises and shared moments around every corner.

Share with friends and make an evening of it.

Okehampton Round Table

01/12/2025

Red Lion Yard has always been a place where people come together, and on Edwardian Evening, it becomes one of the brightest, sheltered areas of Okehampton.

Once a stable yard for the old Red Lion Hotel, this small historic space has grown into a lively shopping precinct. Today it’s home to retail shops, co-ops, local businesses, the market, the cinema and places to grab something tasty; all set within a pedestrian-friendly granite-laden yard between the two Ockment rivers.

On Edwardian Evening, the whole area will glow with distinct red lighting, festoons and a beautiful Christmas Tree. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a moment too, with plenty of places to perch, rest, chat, enjoy a hot treat, and take in the atmosphere before heading back into the high street festivities.

Watch the feature video to see why Red Lion Yard is the ideal place to begin your festive feeling… and how the past and present meet in one historic, cosy corner of town.

The Victorian Arcade has welcomed generations into the heart of Okehampton, and it’s still the gateway to our independent high street today.

Walk through, and you’ll find more than places to shop or eat. People wandering, meeting friends, grabbing a warm drink, and enjoying the atmosphere together.

You’ll spot window displays you haven’t seen before, hear friendly chatter spilling out onto the street, maybe grab a port from a local owner or notice those small touches that only local indy businesses create. It’s the kind of place where you discover something you didn’t know you needed, and feel part of the town while you do.

Okehampton’s Victorian and Edwardian heritage is all around you, in the architecture, the stories, and the way the town is built around the two rivers, which has always brought people together.

Watch today’s feature video to see how the past and present meet… and why this is the perfect place to start your festive feeling.

Share with friends and make an evening of it.
