Luing Community Trust & Luing History Group are holding a Rock, Paper, Chisels Festival from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd September to celebrate Luing's slate quarrying history past and present.

What a fantastic weekend of activities including a Luing from the sea boat trip, demonstration of trimming roofing slates the traditional way and a wonderful celebration on Saturday night with songs and stories and a Taste of Luing buffet! Just missing a picture of George performing!

What a day yesterday, topped off by the Taste of Luing buffet and the amazing evening celebration of ‘Songs and Stories of Stone’ with writers James Robertson and Dougie Strang and music and songs from Alison, Dan and George!

And the sun is STILL shining for our final day of the festival!

Cafe opens at 10.30-3pm, so time to grab a coffee before our events! Displays on Luing’s stone and slate history with geology upstairs, history and archeology downstairs.

11.15-1pm Rock topped front wall at 23 Cullipool. Alastair and Zoë will help you identify the rocks and there is a rummage box to choose a pet to take home.

11.15-1pm Stone spires and stone creations competition on the shore south of the flagpole.

2pm Awards at 2pm Atlantic Islands Centre.

1-2pm Carvings on stone. Guided visit to Kilchattan church and boat graffiti. Meet by graveyard.

And the sun is still shining for our second day here on Luing, Sat 21st 🌞

We’ve a great day planned out in the sunshine, at the Atlantic Islands Centre and in the village halls in Toberonochy and Cullipool.

10-12 Luing from the sea boat trip

11-12.30 Cullipool quarry past & future guided visit. Meet at outdoor tables at the Centre

1-2pm Disappearing stone guided visit to Cullipool shore. Meet at outdoor tables at the Centre

1-3pm Making roofing slates the traditional way. Opposite the outdoor tables at the Centre

2-5pm Rocks of Hope crafting drop-in sessions at both Toberonochy Hall and Cullipool Hall.

2-5pm Building in stone guided walk to two hill forts.
Start and end at Ardinamar

6pm Taste of Luing buffet FULLY BOOKED

7.45-11pm Songs and Stories of Stone at the Centre. Bar open. £10 at door.

The sun is shining and it’s the first day of our Rock Paper Chisels festival here on Luing!

There is something for everyone today (Friday 20th September)

12.30-2pm Carvings on stone - guided visit to Kilchattan church and boat graffiti. Meet by graveyard gate

2.30-5pm Island geology and heritage - shared car safari. Meet outside Cullipool Hall

2.30-4.30pm Islands Industry guided walk. Meet at Cullipool Hall

2-5pm Rocks of hope crafting with slate. Cullipool Hall and Toberonochy Hall. Drop-in

Donations for these very much appreciated to support the island heritage and community activities.

6pm Taste of Luing from the sea at the Atlantic Islands Centre - FULLY BOOKED

7.45-10pm Luing’s history in stone illustrated talks at the Atlantic Islands Centre £10 entry

See the island geology and heritage in a shared-car safari this Friday 20th Sept!

We will make several stops around Luing to see the main rock types, their associated landscape and built history. Walking limited to short distances from cars.

Meet outside Cullipool Hall at 2.30pm!
