Made by Mummy Markets
An affordable marketplace for crafting mothers to sell their creations

Aims and Objectives

To provide an affordable marketplace for mothers to sell their handmade creations. Building a platform from which mothers on maternity leave or career breaks can earn additional money, leading on to a whole new business and career if they desire. To provide training and advice on ho

w to run a successful business that makes more money than it costs through co-operation, skills sharing, resource pooling and expert advice. To ensure a high-quality marketing presence for events with priorities in; marketing on social media, product photography, and local press coverage. These events are not just another ‘art and crap fair’. Crafters will be carefully selected and supported throughout the process ensuring a high quality of products on display appealing to a range of tastes. From cakes to crochet, photography to pottery, make-up to millinery…...and all that’s in between. Makers must 'make' what I consider to be handmade and saleable to my customer base. Some products can be machine-made. For example, mugs or greetings cards printed with designs may be mass-produced, but the artwork is that of the artist/maker. Hand knitted items may be made with commercially produced wool. (Useless you really want to spin your own which is very cool!) You get the idea - basically not bits from Boyes stuck together, lovely as they can be, this is not what me and my customers are after. The Plan

To hold a spring and autumn market showcasing the best that Mummy Makers* can create. These will be family-friendly events but will create a space where Makers can have face-to-face interactions with their customers in a professional environment. Events will be short and sweet, just one busy afternoon, so you'll be home in time for tea!

*Definition of a mummy who makes. Most of my clients are mothers, or fathers (men are very welcome to trade at my events) but not all. Motherhood is not a requirement to trade with me, I've aimed my services and style at mothers but it can work for other makers too. If you feel comfortable trading under the Made by Mummy Market banner, and meet my criteria I'll be thrilled to hear from you. My Motivation

I am a 36-year-old Mum, wife, and enthusiastic crafter. I stayed at home with my children for 5 years, leaving a formal workplace. I now run my business from home and have clients in craft, heritage, and museums providing marketing services alongside my own events. I love a good craft fair. I enjoy finding that perfect, unique, and beautiful gift for someone special. But I’ve become frustrated with craft fairs being overpriced for sellers, under-marketed to customers, and generally not showcasing true crafts(wo)manship. Before having my children, I worked in museums running education & community engagement projects and public programmes. I have a degree in Archaeology and have worked for large and small organisations including The Bowes Museum, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, and Gayle Mill in Wensleydale. I have a great deal of experience in public engagement, organising and marketing events. I was a member of the NCT volunteering as their secretary and sat on Romanby Toddler Group Committee. Outside of child-related matters, I am also a member of Romany WI and sit on the committee, currently in the post of President. You may use my official title 'Madam President' whenever you like! ;)

News for 2024 - closing down - it's time for a new chapter...

There have been a number of changes at Made by Mummy Markets HQ in the last 12 months, so I wanted to update you all. Many of you know that as well as running my curated craft markets I also provide marketing services for sole traders and other businesses.

My largest client is Kiplin Hall & Gardens, a historic house museum between Northallerton and Richmond.

I've found it increasingly difficult to keep all of the plates spinning; markets, clients, home life, volunteering with the WI. After careful consideration I have decided to put down one of these plates, to make the juggle more manageable. I will not be running any more markets.

I'm delighted to be starting 2024 by taking on a permanent part time position working for Kiplin Hall & Gardens as Marketing Manager.

I am sad to be saying goodbye to my events and makers, but it is time for this change. I have many people to thank for their support in making Made by Mummy Markets a success. I can't name them all, but there are a few special thank yous I must make.

To Jessica at Thief Hall for her generosity in the early days. Jo Garlick Artist for her faith and constant support. Kathryn at Designer Makers Market for always listening and the cups of tea! David Jennings, for all the reasons you know. For every friend who has shared a post, put up a poster, tidied up at an event - THANK YOU!

Thank you to the makers who traded with me, and the customers who shopped with them.

I am going to leave this page open for a while. I may still share crafty posts and event news, we will see how it goes.

Happy New Year!

Enjoyed seeing Gaia at today. Found it less emotional and impactful than the moon display but still impressive. I especially liked getting to see the vastness of the oceans and a better sense of scale of the continents in comparison to a flat page and distorted maps. Worth the trip to see it if you can make it there.

Meet the maker... Kay and Andy from Pure Yorkshire Honey

Another new face for Made by Mummy Markets. Having been neighbours with Kay at another event I knew she'd make a great addition to our gang. So I'm thrilled to welcome her.

Kay explains her business in her own words

"In late summer 2018 we joined the Richmondshire District Beekeeping Association and after undertaking a small amount of training, bought our first colony of Carniolan bees. We are first-time beekeepers and it’s been a privilege to learn about honey bees and how look after them and they reward us with lots of lovely honey!

Andy has completed three years of formal beekeeping training, one day he hopes to become a Master Beekeeper. Kay is in charge of honey extraction and bottling, and also likes to create recipes for other bee-derived products including lip balms, soaps and other goodies which we make using our own beeswax and honey.

Hopefully you enjoy everything our bees have to offer!"

SWEET! Meet Kay this Sunday, 11th June 1pm - 4pm, at The Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton.

Meet the maker... Amy from BEAM natural body care

A big welcome to a new face to Made by Mummy Markets, Amy. Pop over to like Amy's page and show her some love.

Let's hear from Amy about her makers life..

"I'm the founder, formulator and maker at BEAM. I live in Richmond, North Yorkshire with my husband and two awesome girls. We have two elderly cats who we love...a LOT! Plus, a herd of dinosaurs (chickens... They are T-rex chickens!)

I learnt to make soap a few years ago and it became a huge passion. After much studying (and even more trial and error), I found my perfect recipe and was entirely hooked. I wanted to create products that were as natural as possible, whilst doing amazing things for your skin. I was also keen to contribute to reducing plastic in bathrooms and encouraging people back to bar soap...a small luxury that I've enjoyed for years. So, I made some incredible essential oil blends and designed my soaps. Here we are!"

And here she is! Come and say hello on Sunday 11th June 1pm - 4pm at The Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton.

Meet the maker Keely Pearce of Kppapercuts

Welcome to Keely for her first Made by Mummy Market.

Around 8 years ago Keely treated herself to a paper cutting kit for her birthday. She was immediately hooked and quickly filled her house with her creations, learning and improving with each work. Running her online shop Keely sells her work, and runs workshops, even creating her own starter kit to help people get to grips with this tricky method.

You can see some of Keely’s hypnotic videos online before the event, come and say hello to Keely at the Made by Mummy Markets on Sunday 11th June at The Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton, open 1pm – 4pm.
