Made by Mummy Markets
An affordable marketplace for crafting mothers to sell their creations
Aims and Objectives
To provide an affordable marketplace for mothers to sell their handmade creations. Building a platform from which mothers on maternity leave or career breaks can earn additional money, leading on to a whole new business and career if they desire. To provide training and advice on ho
w to run a successful business that makes more money than it costs through co-operation, skills sharing, resource pooling and expert advice. To ensure a high-quality marketing presence for events with priorities in; marketing on social media, product photography, and local press coverage. These events are not just another ‘art and crap fair’. Crafters will be carefully selected and supported throughout the process ensuring a high quality of products on display appealing to a range of tastes. From cakes to crochet, photography to pottery, make-up to millinery…...and all that’s in between. Makers must 'make' what I consider to be handmade and saleable to my customer base. Some products can be machine-made. For example, mugs or greetings cards printed with designs may be mass-produced, but the artwork is that of the artist/maker. Hand knitted items may be made with commercially produced wool. (Useless you really want to spin your own which is very cool!) You get the idea - basically not bits from Boyes stuck together, lovely as they can be, this is not what me and my customers are after. The Plan
To hold a spring and autumn market showcasing the best that Mummy Makers* can create. These will be family-friendly events but will create a space where Makers can have face-to-face interactions with their customers in a professional environment. Events will be short and sweet, just one busy afternoon, so you'll be home in time for tea!
*Definition of a mummy who makes. Most of my clients are mothers, or fathers (men are very welcome to trade at my events) but not all. Motherhood is not a requirement to trade with me, I've aimed my services and style at mothers but it can work for other makers too. If you feel comfortable trading under the Made by Mummy Market banner, and meet my criteria I'll be thrilled to hear from you. My Motivation
I am a 36-year-old Mum, wife, and enthusiastic crafter. I stayed at home with my children for 5 years, leaving a formal workplace. I now run my business from home and have clients in craft, heritage, and museums providing marketing services alongside my own events. I love a good craft fair. I enjoy finding that perfect, unique, and beautiful gift for someone special. But I’ve become frustrated with craft fairs being overpriced for sellers, under-marketed to customers, and generally not showcasing true crafts(wo)manship. Before having my children, I worked in museums running education & community engagement projects and public programmes. I have a degree in Archaeology and have worked for large and small organisations including The Bowes Museum, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, and Gayle Mill in Wensleydale. I have a great deal of experience in public engagement, organising and marketing events. I was a member of the NCT volunteering as their secretary and sat on Romanby Toddler Group Committee. Outside of child-related matters, I am also a member of Romany WI and sit on the committee, currently in the post of President. You may use my official title 'Madam President' whenever you like! ;)
