What did the Romans ever do for us? Well, one little known gift they left us was the concept of board games.
The Brading Roman Villa is “Caesar-ing” the opportunity to become part of the Wight Games Festival by holding two Roman Board Games days at the villa at Morton near Brading …although why not make a day of it at the historic villa?
Among the challenges will be Rota, an enigmatic board game from the Roman Empire, first introduced to the modern world in 1916 by Elmer Truesdell Merrill. As befits a Roman event, the winners will receive wreaths, public honour and certificates.
Expect fun, friendly challenges with a slightly competitive edge, perfect for families, friends, and anyone looking to try something a little different this summer.
Thursday 23rd July, 1:30 – 3:00pm
Thursday 30th July, 1:30 – 3:00pm
A small donation to the Wight Games Festival is requested to take part, helping support 'Mountbatten Isle of Wight Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Independent Arts

The Wight Games Festival is all about sports and activities of all flavours, so we were delighted when the Alzheimer’s Café Isle of Wight at the Parklands Dementia Resource Centre in Cowes suggested a Rummikub tournament.
Rummikub is a classic tile game that blends strategy, luck and quick thinking – It’s perfect for all ages!
Even if you have never played the game before, you will soon pick it up.
There will be four Wednesday sessions in July on the 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th with the finals on August 5, from 3pm to 4.30pm for the July dates and 3pm to 5pm for the August finale.
There will be a trophy and café voucher for the winner.
Find out more about the event at wightgames.co.uk.

If you love racquet sports but find tennis, squash or badminton is too strenuous, then you have probably discovered the joy of pickleball.
It was invented 60 years ago as a backyard children’s game in the USA but has gone from strength to strength since then and is now a worldwide phenomenon.
As part of the Wight Games Festival, West Wight Sports & Community Centre is putting on a day-long competition on Sunday, July 5th, from 11.30am to 4.30pm.
If you are a seasoned player or just fancy giving it a go, find out more at https://www.wightgames.co.uk/.

With our Island surrounded by water, it would have been rude not to have included some watersports in the Wight Games Festival.
East Cowes Sailing Club have come on board…pardon the pun…and are offering not one but three waterborne activities in The Solent.
Their programme of sailing, canoeing and paddleboarding will be delivered in a safe environment, close to shore off the Shrape in East Cowes, acknowledged as the best sail-training and watersports area on the Isle of
Single-handed Pico dinghies, loaned by UKSA, will be available for competitors with the skill to sail single-handed: as will double-handed RS dinghies for competitors with proficiency.
Easy-to-use canoes will also be available as will paddleboards for short races.
The dates of these events are yet to be announced but for more information go to https://www.wightgames.co.uk/.
