The great Jack Johnson vs the giant Jess Willard
ON THIS DAY :
1915 April 5th, Havana, Cuba.
JESS WILLARD ( 240lb ) vs JACK JOHNSON ( 225lb )
World heavyweight championship
Jack was now 37 years of age, and he was no longer the chiselled athlete he had once been, but he had far greater experience than his 33 year old opponent ; Jess had started boxing over 15 years after the champion's career had begun
This bout was made over a duration of 45 rounds, the intention being that Willard would wear Johnson down, because it was thought at this stage Jack would not have the stamina to get through so many rounds .
Jack should of course never have agreed to such a long fight, but he believed even on his worst day, he could beat Willard in the first half of the fight. Turns out he was wrong.
It was tremendously hot, added to the shape he was in, and Jack also found he couldn't manhandle Willard in the clinches, so for the most part, the fight was kept at long range.
Jack Johnson fought in flurries and as the rounds went on he tried on a good few occasions to stop Willard, but the giant cowboy simply tied him up .
All through the fight Jess stuck to a game plan, he jabbed and threw a long right hand, this one two missed for most of the fight, Johnson for all his infirmity and the incredible heat still managed to block or catch Willard's blows in the palm of his gloves.
As the rounds went into the twenties, Jack knew he had to stop the challenger soon, he tried to stop Jess with sharp bursts and flurries, but Willard was prepared, he had a good chin and was incredibly durable.
Jack was well ahead on points, but going into the 26th round he had slowed and was running out of steam ; in that round Jess fainted to throw the left and landed a powerful straight right, Jack went down and he was counted out.
After the fight Jack claimed he had thrown the bout, and he could easily have gotten back up, it's doubtful he threw the fight, however he may have been able to get up, but choose to stay down because he was exhausted. Truth is we will never know for certain, but there is footage of the Knockout so people can decide for themselves.
One thing is for sure, Jess Willard was the new champion ; white America had the world heavyweight title again, and they intended to keep it, it would be over 22 years before another black fighter got a shot at the championship.
