A lockdown walk changed my life and now I’m a sea glass artist specialising in handcrafted jewellery, engaging sea glass talks, and creative workshops.

I love sharing the history, beauty and storytelling of sea glass while helping others create with it.

We’ve met some beautiful cats in Silves (Portugal). We visit them almost everyday. No beach or sea glass posts, as we are inland this time, but will pop to the coast tomorrow as it would be rude not to when in the Algarve.

Another lovely sea glass workshop! 💙🌊

It was a pleasure to welcome two lovely ladies from Northampton, who are holidaying here in beautiful Northumberland, along with another lady from south of the Tyne.

She already has a wonderful collection of sea glass and was keen to discover a creative way to turn her treasures into something special. ✨

There’s something rather magical about taking pieces of glass shaped by the sea and giving them a whole new story. 🩵

There are days on the beach when one tiny discovery opens a door into history.

This sea glass bottle top caught my eye because of one word embossed into the glass: Garton.

To most people it would simply be an old piece of glass. To a sea glass collector, it’s the beginning of a story.

Frederick Gibson Garton was a Nottingham grocer who developed what would become the famous HP Sauce. He registered the H.P. name in the 1890s before selling the recipe and trademark, and his name continued to appear on early bottles.

What fascinates me even more is the journey. I grew up in the Midlands, where Garton’s story began, yet I found this fragment washed up on a beach in Northumberland. Somewhere between a Nottingham factory, a household table, the sea and decades of tides, this tiny piece of history found its way to me.

The stopper itself can generally be dated to the late 1890s to the early 1900s simply by the embossed Garton name. Without the original bottle it would be difficult to be more precise, which is what makes this story so special.

After researching its history, I recently acquired an original Garton bottle with its stopper still intact. Seeing the complete bottle alongside the sea-worn stopper I found on the beach feels like bringing two chapters of the same story back together after more than a century.

This is exactly why I love sea glass hunting. Every piece has a story waiting to be discovered. Sometimes all it takes is a single name embossed in glass to begin a journey through history.

I’ve been experimenting with an idea and would love your thoughts…

Should I patina the copper wire on this sea glass piece? 🤔

It’s not something I’ve tried before. The process would blacken the copper, and then I’d gently brush it back with a fine wire brush to reveal the highlights and texture. I love the thought of giving it an aged, weathered look that echoes the journey the sea glass has already been on.

Have any of you tried patinating copper? If so, did you love the result? Any tips, tricks or things to avoid before I take the plunge?

I’d really appreciate your advice before I commit this piece to its next chapter. 😊

This is a lovely pebble from a beach in Greece that was gifted to me by a client to commissioned me to make some jewellery pieces for his partner. I decided that I would wrap it in silver plated copper for myself and where with appreciation and gratitude

Sometimes creativity connects us to moments we never expected to be part of.

This lovely graduate is wearing a solid silver starfish necklace that I created for her graduation day. And the starfish could not have been more fitting, as she was celebrating graduating with a BSc in Marine Biology and Zoology. ⭐️🌊

As a maker, there is something incredibly special about knowing that something you have created with your own hands has been chosen to mark such an important moment in someone else’s life.

A degree represents years of hard work, determination and discovery, and I feel genuinely privileged that one of my creations became a small part of that celebration.

Creativity has a lovely way of connecting people and stories. In this case, a shared thread of the sea, from studying marine life to a little silver starfish made by the coast.

Congratulations to this wonderful graduate, and thank you for allowing my work to be part of such a special day. 🎓⭐️🌊
