The concept of width in Tai Chi. This is a little sketch outlining what "width" is in Yang-style Tai Chi. The feet are a shoulder's width apart with the front foot straight and the back foot at 45 degrees. There is also a 45 degree angle between the feet. There should be enough space between the feet to fit a skateboard through. Use this diagram for "Ward Off" and "Single Whip", although "Ward Off" faces north and "Single Whip" faces west. Use the mirror image of this for "Mirror Hands", "Press" and "Double Push" facing east. Both feet are planted on the floor (remember your root) and the weight distribution between the feet is about 50-50 leaving your centre of gravity safely in the middle. The knees bend in the same direction as the toes and there is usually an elbow in line with the front knee and toe.

It was very nice to see some new faces in the class tonight, which was the first week of a ten week course. It seems like a very nice group of people, and looks like it will be a fun journey to be taking together. It's not entirely too late to join the class, so if you came to the free taster and missed the first week, don't worry you can soon catch up. If you came tonight and can't remember what you did, that's perfectly normal. So don't worry and see you next week!
