These two gravel riders were on the singletrack across the moor above Hebden Bridge. Did I catch them up?

Its a twisty and bumpy track across Midgley Moor and its one that rewards you every time.

At the gate at the top of the Catherine House descent, a very long and steep drop, I caught the riders up and we chatted.

A good day to be out on a popular section of the Calder Divide Trail mtb route.

It’s not all remote moorland as we pass through small towns like Hebden Bridge, Marsden and Castleford.

On the 5th Calder Divide weekend there are four routes to choose from with two grvl and two MTB options.

A few riders can complete the route in one day but most take two days with a farm campsite at the half way point.

The Calder Divide Trail is the only bikepacking route in the world to trace the flow of a single river by connecting tracks and lanes along its watershed.

In the Pennines a watershed is where streams gather on the high ground and flow either west to the Irish Sea or east to the North Sea.

The River Calder has its source on Flower Scar Moor high above Todmorden and its on this high ground, away from the boggy valley floor, that the earliest tracks were made by hunter gathers and, centuries later, by medieval packhorse traders as they transported salt and wool across the region.

The old tracks are still there, hidden in the folds of the hills and our trail connects them in a circular route that embraces the Rivers Colne, Holme and Spen as they join the Calder and flow onto Castleford to meet the River Aire.

Piethorne Valley is crossed by a 17th Century packhorse track and a dozen other tracks that run along three reservoirs.

On the Calder Divide Trail we take the old track heading north with a series of steep climbs and long flowing descents bringing us to Rakewood Footbridge and, for those riding in these parts for the first time, there’s a surprise ahead.

The quiet of the moors is shattered because the footbridge takes us over six lanes of the M62, one of the busiest motorways in England.

Thankfully the noise is soon behind us as once over the bridge we’re back on the old track riding over semi-wild moorland that sits below Blackstone Edge, an outcrop of millstone grit that will outlast the motorway.

The Calder Divide Trail takes its name from the River Calder which flows for 45 miles through one corner of West Yorkshire.

The trail isn’t 45 miles though as we follow bridleways along the watershed of the Calder, connecting tracks on the moors where the river rises and across the floodplain.

We follow the flow of the river eastwards through a diverse and beautiful landscape as it gathers the blue veins of the River Holme, River Spen, Elphin, Hebble and a dozen other rivers to merge with the River Aire at Castleford on the broad floodplain.

Join us on the 5th CDT, 19th-20th September, with a farm campsite on Saturday night and event hub at Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

The Calder Divide Trail is a long distance circular route that connects old packhorse tracks and more recent greenways that exist along the watershed - the high ground- of the River Calder in West Yorkshire.

Naze Lane is one of those 17th C packhorse tracks and fortunate for us on the CDT we go down the lane and then onto Todmorden.

Naze Lane is on the 150 mile MTB route but there is also a 100 mile MTB and two gravel bike routes that climb up to London Road with fine views of Stoodley Pike.

The 5th CDT is on 19th - 20th September though it can be enjoyed any time as the GPX is on the website:

On the Calder Divide Trail we take Naze Lane to descend to the valley floor and onto Todmorden.

You arrive at Naze Lane having crossed one of the wildest moors in West Yorkshire and having descended into and out of the deep folds of Ramsden Clough with its packhorse bridge.

As its a very steep lane with a middle section that has two tight corners, no stone wall and vertical drops of 30+ feet its best done on a mtb.

Fortunately there are two gates on Naze Lane that force you to pause and take stock before hurtling onto the final and steepest part of the run which is of course on mossy cobbles!

Event: CDT
Date: 19th - 20th September
Routes: 4 options with two mtb and two grvl routes
Distance: 100 miles to 152 miles

Naze Lane is on the 'Whirlaw' MTB route.

Castleford is where the River Calder joins the River Aire with the towpath making fab riding across the floodplain.

The 5th CDT event is on 19th - 20th September but it can be ridden at any time as the two main GPX files are on the website and free to download.

I didn’t expect to find a favorite on the Calder Divide but there are three places I keep coming back to as the trail crosses ‘12 valleys, 6 moors and 1 floodplain’.

Wessenden Valley with its rough stuff track running along four reservoirs is a gem of a place as no road cuts through this long, deep valley and we head downhill on a gravel track that twists and turns, dips and rises.

The stone steps onto Marsden Moor are always a challenge to ‘clean’ but worth a try. The reward as you reach the top is a singletrack on millstone grit taking you onto the high ridge below Buckstones.

Horbury Cutting is one of many easy tracks we use to cross the floodplain. The towpath dates from 1838 and runs from the Figure of Three locks to the Bingley Arms with abundant hawthorn, alder, geese, swans and a cormorant reminding us of who we share these spaces with.

The 5th CDT event is on 19th - 20th September with the four routes - 2 MTB and 2 grvl bike - taking riders along the three tracks mentioned here.

GPX files are on the website and free to download for a DIY adventure.
