Congratulations to HOPE IS A WORD by filmmaker Maria Galliani Dyrvik and producer Anita Vedå which scooped our 2026 LandxSea Audience Award!

A powerful and inspiring documentary, Hope is a Word follows Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey, who has spent decades advocating for communities affected by oil exploitation in the Niger Delta, through non-violent protest, human rights work and poetry as a tool and a means to give voice to the oppressed.

We watch him as he nurtures a new generation of writers and poets, raising hope and encouraging expression and action so that his legacy and fight might continue even when all seems overwhelming.

We were delighted that both Maria and Anita were able to join us at the festival, here displaying their award, hand-crafted by Irene Hughes of Montrose pottery studio Clay Half!

Congratulations to COMMUNITY THEATRE by Lewis Baillie, the North Light Award-winning film of LandxSea 2026!

This documentary short is shot in the Fife town of Buckhaven, where a community theatre project brings local stories, memories and voices to the stage. Through three generations of working-class experience, Community Theatre celebrates shared heritage, resilience and the enduring spirit of place.

Our annual juried North Light Award shines a light on bold Scottish filmmaking that reimagines our relationship with the natural world and the environment around us. With a £500 cash prize, it honours originality, impact, and creative vision in environmental storytelling.

"Bring­ing this year’s fest­ival to an end will be a screen­ing of Scot­tish Bafta-win­ning Eilidh Munro’s doc­u­ment­ary The Her­ring Queen.

The film fol­lows two par­al­lel stor­ies in Eye­mouth: the cher­ished tra­di­tion of crown­ing a new Her­ring Queen and the hard­ship of fish­er­men try­ing to make a liv­ing with almost no fish left to catch.

“The whole idea was to have these kinds of two par­al­lel but inter­woven stor­ies, one of a fest­ival that’s going stronger than ever and the other sort of bed­rock of that fest­ival ebbing away,” Munro told The National."

Join us on Thursday 10 September, 'the Night Afore LandxSea' for a Dram of Science, a relaxed evening of science, stories and tastings in the Montrose Playhouse Project bar.

Bringing together researchers from the The James Hutton Institute and sustainable Scottish winery Two Raccoons, Dram of Science explores the science and ingenuity behind what we grow, ferment, brew and distil, from climate, crops and barley to winemaking, food waste and Scotland’s world-famous drinks.

Expect a friendly, sociable evening with short talks, big ideas, tastings and plenty of time to chat*. Our speakers will explore how farming shapes the land, how barley varieties are developed, what a changing climate means for the future of crops, food systems, brewing and distilling, and how Two Raccoons transforms surplus fruit into delicious, limited-edition Scottish wines.

Deep in France’s Vosges forests, celebrated photographer Vincent Munier journeys with his naturalist father and 12-year-old son in search of lynx, deer, owls and the elusive capercaillie.

More than a nature film, this is a hushed family portrait: a meditation on patience, inheritance and learning to listen.
