On This Day!!

On this day back in 2016, Ring of Fire was accidentally invented.

It all started when Gary Spinks had what can only be described as a terrible idea disguised as a good one. He bought his friend and work colleague Chris Stevens a new bike for his birthday. Nice gesture, right?

Wrong.

Just as Chris’s shiny new bike arrived, news emerged of a bike ride from London to Paris. Before Chris had even worked out how many gears the bike had, Gary had somehow convinced him to cycle to another country.

Joined by MKRUFC rugby player Iain Talbot and Gary’s brother Johnny, the fearless foursome set off for Paris armed with a paper map, unlimited optimism, and absolutely no technology. No sat nav. No GPS. No route planning apps. Just four blokes and a vague sense of direction.

The route was simple enough on paper. Unfortunately, they spent most of the trip looking at the paper upside down.

To make matters worse, there was no support crew. Well, there was supposed to be, but they got lost too.

Against all odds, several wrong turns (Swing Swang) and what was probably enough extra mileage to reach Belgium, they eventually arrived in Paris a few days later and raised an incredible Β£10,000.

Most sensible people would have called it a one-off and never spoken of it again.

Instead, they looked at each other and said, β€œThat was fun, let’s do more.”

And so, Ring of Fire was born.

Fast forward to today and we’ve raised over Β£930,000 for charity. Not bad for an idea that began with a birthday bike, a paper map, and four men who had no clue where they were going.

This weekend we’ll be looking to add even more to that total at our 36-hour Spinathon at MKRUFC Ruggerfest.

Proof that sometimes the best things in life start with a bad idea and a complete lack of planning. 🚴πŸ”₯πŸ˜‚

πŸ‰ Have You Got the Balls to Get Checked? πŸ‰

Come and meet the team from MK Prostate Cancer Support at the ROF 36-Hour Spinathon at Ruggerfest on Saturday 6th June!

They will be there raising awareness about prostate cancer, sharing information about the support they provide, and chatting about the work they do across the local community.

And while we’re talking balls… have you got the balls to get checked? πŸ˜‰

The good news is that prostate cancer testing isn’t what many people think. Forget the stories about the slap of latex gloves and eye-watering examinations! These days, the first step is usually a simple blood test that takes just a couple of minutes.

Early detection can make a huge difference, so why not come along, have a chat, and learn more about looking after yourself and the people you care about.

πŸ‰ Join us at Ruggerfest on 6th June
πŸ‰ Learn about prostate cancer and local support services
πŸ‰ Help us spread awareness and save lives

Because being brave isn’t just about what happens on the rugby pitch. πŸ’™

This week’s spotlight is on our charity partner, Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y) β€” a charity dedicated to preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening, research, and supporting affected families. ❀️

Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people lose their lives to undiagnosed heart conditions. C.R.Y works tirelessly to change that by offering cardiac screenings, raising awareness of warning signs, and providing vital support to families and communities.

Early detection can save lives. Please take a moment to learn more, share their message, and help spread awareness. Together, we can make a difference. πŸ’™
