What happens when one of London’s most traditional communities puts down roots in one of England’s most English towns?

We’re partnering with to bring you Canvey – The Promised Island (2018, dir. Riete Oord); a fascinating documentary following an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family as they swap Stamford Hill for Canvey Island, and the unexpected conversations that follow.

Screening as part of L’Chaim! - a series celebrating the heritage of Ark’s building - and Jewish Culture Month (16 May–16 June), a new national festival celebrating Jewish life in the UK.

Plus short films curated by Margate Film Festival. 🎬

It’s official. 🎉 Margate Film Festival is now a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

Eight years of community cinema, big screens, bold ideas, and brilliant audiences - and now we have formal, solid foundations to match.

Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey - we’ve had over 150 volunteers help build and deliver the festival over the last 7 festivals; and especially to our amazing team, trustees and board of advisors!

Plenty more ways to get involved in both voluntary capacity and paid opportunities via our website.

Margate Film Festival is looking for YOUR ideas!

In a place with no cinema, we want to experiment with what “cinema” even means. We’re looking to collaborate with artists, performers, makers, curators, venues, organisations - anyone with bold ideas that are inclusive, immersive, challenging and a little bit wild.

We’re expanding beyond the screen for our 7th edition this November - think projection mapping, live scores, interactive installations, immersive experiences, and events that take cinema out into the streets and unusual spaces around town.

Previous pitches have included live AV projects and improv soundtracks, ink light shows, projection walks, and interactive kids’ screenings. Now we want to hear from you.

Expression of interest deadline: July 1st
Festival: November 2026
