Rest in Power Peddy
Manchester Carnival has lost a true legend. Our community mourns the passing of Mr Alexander 'Peddy' Herbert, the original Mr Manchester Carnival.
For over five decades, Peddy was the heartbeat of Manchester Carnival. He didn't just participate; he shaped what carnival means in this city.
His vibrant costumes, his infectious energy, his unwavering commitment — they defined what carnival truly means. But Peddy's contribution extended far beyond the parade itself. He taught steel pans and costume design in schools across the city.
He created intricate carnival costumes that brought visions to life. He captured precious moments for families across our community through his photography.
He was an ambassador, invited by arts councils and carnival organisations in other cities to share his expertise and vision. He travelled, he mentored, he inspired generations of young people to understand and celebrate their heritage.
During our Carnival50 celebrations, we captured Peddy's words and his presence — a moment to honour one of the architects of this carnival. He showed us the importance of our elders and the heritage they've preserved, the foundation upon which we all stand.
Right up until his final years, he showed up. He was on that stage, part of our parade, living out his passion because carnival wasn't just what he did — it was who he was.
In his own words, hear directly from Peddy about his journey and his love for this culture.
Our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and everyone whose life he touched.
Manchester and the Carnival community has lost a stalwart.
Thank you Peddy and may your soul rest in peace, in the carnival in the sky.
From the Manchester Carnival Committee.
