A Sorry State explores the realities of navigating a broken welfare system in Wales, challenging the rhetoric that vilifies those who rely on state support.

Produced in collaboration with people with lived experience of disability, the project brings together photography, installation, sculpture and performance, translating their experiences of the welfare system into artwork.

A Sorry State is a project funded by the Welsh Arts Council, produced in collaboration with Menna Buss, Abby Poulson, GS Artists, 9to90 Creative Community, Oriel Sploj, Disability Arts Cymru and Ffotogallery.

🗓️ Open until 5 November 2026

12/11/26-06/12/26
Sploj is excited to present SALT MARSH, a solo exhibition by Lowri Heckler, opening 12 November, 6:30–9:30pm.

Three chains hang from burnt fence posts jutting out from the wall. Silver maple leaves, each bearing a message, are tied along their lengths. Their forms resemble throwing stars, or little hands held up in greeting or defence. Frozen petals gather among them. Helicopter seeds become spikes. Gifts, perhaps, or forms of protection. Beauty and violence are offered hand in hand.

A proverb is carried from mouth to mouth. A fable offers a lesson, often at a cost. Fairy tales promise transformation, but rarely without consequence. Their warnings survive long after the circumstances that produced them have disappeared.

Drawing on the Welsh landscape and the Otherworld of Annwn, SALT MARSH explores storytelling as a way of navigating an uncertain world. Here, fable and landscape meet in a place where the whimsical turns violent, and the beautiful becomes difficult to trust.

Mae Sploj yn falch o gyflwyno SALT MARSH, arddangosfa unigol gan Lowri Heckler, sy’n agor ar 12 Tachwedd, rhwng 6:30 a 9:30yh.

Mae tair cadwyn yn hongian o bolion ffensio wedi’u llosgi, sy’n ymwthio allan o’r wal. Mae dail masarn a***n, pob un â neges wedi’i hysgrifennu arno, wedi’u clymu ar hyd y cadwyni. Mae eu siâp yn dwyn i gof sêr, neu ddwylo bach wedi’u codi mewn cyfarchiad neu amddiffyniad. Ymgasglai petalau wedi rhewi yn eu plith. Mae hadau coed masarn, y rhai sy’n troelli fel hofrennydd, yn troi’n bigau. Rhoddion, efallai, neu ryw fath o amddiffyniad. Cyflwynir harddwch a thrais law yn llaw.

Mae diarhebion yn cael eu trosglwyddo ar lafar. Cyniga chwedl gwers i’w ddysgu, er yn aml mae yna bris i hynny. Addawa chwedlau trawsnewidiad, ond yn aml efo sgil effeithiau. Mae eu rhybuddion yn parhau ymhell ar ôl i’r amgylchiadau a’u creodd hen ddiflannu.

Gan dynnu ysbrydoliaeth o dirwedd Cymru a’r Arallfyd Annwn, mae SALT MARSH yn archwilio adrodd straeon fel ffordd o lywio byd ansicr. Yma, mae chwedl a thirwedd yn cyfarfod mewn man lle mae’r rhyfeddol yn troi’n dreisgar, a lle mae’n anodd ymddiried yn yr hyn sy’n hardd.

A pair of Manx shearwaters reunite in their burrow after migrating from South America to Enlli and whilst the underwater calls of ballenas (whales) echo back.

We will open the exhibition with a talk from 1400-1600, followed by the exhibition opening from 1600-1800. In the talk Morag Colquhoun will be joined by environmental archaeologist, Patricia Allan, marine biologist, May Platt (joining by video from Ecuador), and writer, Rebecca Ray.

Important! Tomorrow, Tuesday 14 July at 12.00, is your last chance to see Effi o Blaenau. Due to an error, this screening is not listed in the printed programme.

Please could you share this post?

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came to watch the film. We had a great turnout for all our screenings, and we’re so pleased to see this Welsh-language film receiving so much positive recognition everywhere, not just at the Lantern.

Thank you for supporting Welsh cinema!
