Lubenham Scarecrow Festival

Lubenham Scarecrow Festival Once a year, the Scarecrows take over Lubenham village. Imaginative, funny, often daft, the scarecrows are a delight.

Families come from far afield to enjoy the scarecrows, the food, the music, the stalls ... the fun goes on and on.

THEY'RE COMING HOME!

The Lubenham Scarecrow Festival will return to the streets of the lovely Leicestershire village on September 10-11.

After a gap of two years in which we have all been deprived of the smile-inducing, often bonkers and always charming straw-based creations, hand-crafted by the highly creative people of the village, the festival will return to the streets and the village green in that lovely late-summer, early-autumn bit of the year - just when we're all in the mood for fun.

The commitment to bring the festival back has only been possible because so many members of the community have stepped up and taken on key roles in organising the event. It doesn't start on September 10 - preparations for the festival began late last year and will continue right through the next eight months.

Our thanks to all those that have volunteered to bring their skills and their hard work to bear on making this a great event.

Our thanks in advance to all the residents of the village who will bring those delightful scarecrows back to the streets.

And our thanks to you. Because you are coming, aren't you?

We look forward to welcoming you back in September.

Please share the good news.

Can you help the Scarecrow Festival return to the streets of Lubenham in 2022?

A straw poll of Lubenham residents has shown that many would welcome a revival of the long-established village-wide celebration of scarecrows in September.

For that to happen, though, a number of key roles still need to be taken on by willing volunteers in the months running up to the big weekend (and beyond). Some progress has been made in attracting helping hands for the task and the organisers are more positive about the prospects of completing the team to bring the event to life once again.

But we are not there yet. There is a question mark hanging over the event if these local stars can’t be found in time.

That question will be decided at a meeting on Wednesday 16th February, at 8pm, at the Coach & Horses. To hear more about what’s involved and how your skills and enthusiasm can help the scarecrows return, join us then. If you can’t be there on that day then please drop us a line, as some have already done, with a message to this page or by email to [email protected].

Over two decades the community has built a hugely popular annual festival of family fun, bringing tens of thousands of scarecrow-spotters to the streets of the village, filled the Green with food stalls, crafts, fun fairs and music, and packed out all the car parks. The events have raised important sums to support deserving village causes.

The organising team are hoping to meet you on the 16th February and for a return of the well-loved event in September.

Scarecrow Festival to return to Lubenham in 2022?

Scarecrow enthusiasts in Lubenham are invited to take on several exciting roles to help the previously annual festival return to the streets of the village in 2022. But… there is a question mark hanging over the event if these local stars can’t be found in time.

Over two decades the community has built a hugely popular annual festival of family fun. At the heart of the weekend-long party have been the many hundreds of scarecrows crafted by talented villagers and displayed on the streets outside their homes.

The early-autumn event has, over two decades, brought tens of thousands of scarecrow-spotters to the streets of the Leicestershire village, filled the Green with food stalls, crafts, fun fairs and music, and packed out all the car parks. They have raised large sums to support deserving village causes.

After two years of covid restrictions during which scarecrows have not been lovingly crafted, the Green has remained quiet and the fields for car parking have remained empty (except for the local sheep), everyone wants to know if the festival will take place again next year.

In the past two pandemic-interrupted years several key organisational roles have become vacant - and filling them means finding villagers willing and able to take on some of the best and most challenging jobs – roles on which the success of the whole event depends

If that makes you think “Ooh, I could do that” then please message the organisers here or drop us an email at [email protected].

There will be a get-together in early February to take stock of the situation but until then no date can be set for a return of the scarecrows. The date and venue for that meeting will be announced in January.

In the meantime all fingers are crossed for good news and a return of a well-loved event next September.

The Lubenham Scarecrow Festival will not be going ahead in 2021.

Unable, like other festivals, to ensure that it could secure both official sanction for the two-day village-wide event to take place, along with the event insurance it needs, the organisers have concluded “with heavy hearts” that they cannot proceed once again this year.

Speaking for the group that has organised and run scarecrow festivals for twenty years, chairman Jim Burbidge said: “The village loves to put on this sunny event, but the pandemic continues to cast a deep shadow over it, as it does on so many parts of our lives.”

He added: “We’re sad that we won’t be seeing the hundreds of fantastic scarecrows the residents of Lubenham create to delight us. We’re sad that we won’t be able to welcome the thousands of families that come to fill the streets in every normal year. We’re sad that we won’t be able to raise the funds that do so much to help deserving causes in the village.”

Jim concluded: “But we will be back in 2022 and we look forward to welcoming everyone with a smile next year.”
