Grand Union Folk Club

Grand Union Folk Club Grand Union is a traditional style folk club that meets on most Monday nights in the Horse & Trumpet Why not come and join us? N.B. Guest night charges vary.

Grand Union is a traditional style folk club that meets on Monday nights in the friendly setting of a village pub serving a range of real ales. A place to sit back, relax and lose yourself for a few hours in the company of like minded people with a love of traditional music. "Great singing club" The Wilson Family. The Horse & Trumpet is a lovely CAMRA listed pub, located in Sileby, Leicestershire.

It is traditional in style with lots of nooks and crannies and some great beers. Clive, the landlord has made the club feel very welcome. The pub is one of a small, extremely well kept group of hostelries owned by the Steamin‘ Billy Brewing Co.. The Horse & Trumpet's car park is fairly small; check the map for alternative parking. Singarounds and Guest Nights

Singarounds and guest nights start at 8.00pm (Doors open at 7:30). Singarounds are the very essence of what the club is about and are on the 2nd Monday of each month throughout the year (check the website for the January date if the 2nd Monday is Plough Monday). Normally there is no formal entry charge, but a voluntary contribution of just £1 to help us offset our running costs would be most welcome. Traditional Music Sessions

The music sessions are open to any musician who enjoys playing folk music. While the music tends to have a bias towards the tradition the format is reasonably free and the actual tunes played on any given night are collectively determined by those taking part. The sessions start at 8.00pm, there is no entrance fee and the pub keeps a good cellar with real ales always available. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us. Please note that the monthly English Music workshops that the club used to run ceased in September 2021. Core Members

The Grand Union Folk Club has at its core a group of well established singers and musicians who are drawn together by a common passion - the love of a good session. Even allowing for the occasional absentee, there are enough of us to guarantee that, if you enjoy tradition style acoustic folk music, you will have a great evening out. Getting Here / Sileby

Sileby is a former industrial village and civil parish in the Soar Valley in Leicestershire, between Leicester and Loughborough. Nearby villages include Barrow upon Soar, Mountsorrel, Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake, Seagrave and Cossington. The village has a railway station on the Ivanhoe Line, and trains run hourly to Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Lincoln.[6]

There are two bus links to various neighbouring villages, as well as to Loughborough (Roberts no. 27 and Kinchbus no. 2) and Leicester (Kinchbus no. 2). This network also includes links to the "Skylink" to East Midlands Airport which is about 15 miles away. The village has excellent links to major road transport networks via the nearby A6 and A46 linking directly to the M1 which lies to the west. The A46 will take you to Lincoln in the north and ultimately provides a link to the east coast of England. The Horse & Trumpet has a fairly small car park but there are alternative parking spaces within two minutes walking distance of the pub (see map below). There is a limited amount of parking in front of the shops on both King Street and High Street. However your best bet is to park on the public car park behind the shops.

We have been looking forward to welcoming Dave Webber and Anni Fenteman to our club on Monday 26 January.
Unfortunately both Dave and Anni have been suffering with a winter virus and are still not well enough to travel and perform for us.

It is our wonderful luck that Barrie and Ingrid Temple were coming to see Dave and Anni and have agreed to be out Guests on Monday.

Barrie and Ingrid always provide an entertaining and informative evening- with both traditional and self penned songs interspersed with delightful bickering!!!

Peter Burnham will also be with us so we expect an evening of cracking Geordie and northern song.

We hope to see you on Monday

The Grand Union Folk Club will be meeting on Monday 26th January for an evening with Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman.

Dave and Anni are well known and respected on the UK folk scene and also in the USA and Canada.
In addition to Dave’s own songs, they love to sing the songs that have inspired them from the tradition and those they have encountered on their travels. Anni also has a repertoire of songs from her native North East of England.
They are a joy to listen to with their beautiful harmony singing, often acapella and sometimes together with Dave’s concertina accompaniment.

We hope you will join us on the 26th (£10 members £12 non-members, payable in cash at the door). If you wish to reserve seats, please reply to this email or just come on the night

The Grand Union Folk Club will be meeting on Monday 8th December for an evening with Bryony Griffiths and Alice Jones, on their ‘Wesselbobs’ winter tour. This, their latest album, is a collection of winter Yorkshire songs and has been greeted with much acclaim. They are both fine singers, sharing the lead parts and harmonising together. Bryony is a strong fiddle player and Alice accompanies with guitar, harmonium and even body percussion!

In support, The Well Seasoned Mummers will once again be performing their traditional mumming play, always entertaining with high drama and fine singing and at the same time raising considerable sums of money for local charities.
