A story can create space to think about what comes next.

As part of Taking the Next Step, Verbal used a single story and a supporting toolkit within each session, giving Primary 7 pupils a way to explore challenges through a character before having to speak about themselves directly.

From there, facilitated discussion helped pupils consider different feelings, choices and points of view, before a practical toolkit connected that conversation back to their own lives.

Delivered as part of a wider seven-week programme, in partnership with RAPID NI (lead partner) and Children in Crossfire. Taking the Next Step Programme was funded by DCSDC. A project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

How did young people feel following PEACE of Mind?

Thirty-five per cent recorded a positive change in response to the statement, “I’ve been feeling relaxed.”

This was the largest positive movement recorded for any individual question in the Year Two evaluation.

Through original stories and guided discussion, PEACE of Mind gives young people space to explore emotions, experiences and challenges in a supportive setting.

Our LEADER programme begins this month with three 10-week creative writing groups.

Women's Centre Derry, with their 'Connected'group - Cultural diversity - Begins Tuesday 8 September, 9.30am to 12pm.

Macmillan Cancer Group -Health and wellbeing - Begins Wednesday 16 September, 1pm to 3pm.

Waterside Women's Centre - Health and wellbeing - Begins Thursday 17 September, 9.30am to 11.30am.

This is a project funded through Derry City and Strabane District Council's PEACEPLUS Local Co-Designed Action Plan and supported by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) PEACEPLUS.

The Year Two evaluation of PEACE of Mind included 303 pre-programme surveys, with 298 matched to a post-programme response.

Across the overall matched sample, statistically significant improvements were recorded in:

✅Mental wellbeing

✅Resilience

✅ Self-confidence

✅ Relationships with others

✅ Prosocial behaviour

✅ Conflict resolution

These findings provide an encouraging foundation as PEACE of Mind begins a new year of delivery.

Introducing another year of PEACE of Mind, an engaging, story-based wellbeing initiative that uses Applied Storytelling to help students build emotional resilience, build confidence, and strengthen their understanding of others’ experiences.��

Verbal’s Project Trainers facilitate sessions over six weeks, each session fitting within a single school period. Through guided discussion and reading of a story, the students can express their views and learn how to navigate the issue featured in each story. The stories are crafted by Verbal with tailored content for each year group.

This cross-community initiative is proudly funded by PEACEPLUS and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Taking the Next Step was created for rural Primary 7 pupils, planned across 28 rural primary schools over two academic years, fourteen schools each year.
Where a young person lives shouldn't limit the support available to them as they prepare for secondary school.

Getting ready for secondary school is about more than finding the right classroom.
Taking the Next Step gave pupils space to think about resilience, managing emotions, friendships, and the change of moving up to secondary school.

The wider seven-week programme, delivered by RAPID NI (Lead Partner), Verbal Arts Centre, and Children in Crossfire, also touched on communication, identity, health, risk, and the principles of peace and reconciliation.

Our LEADER programme with 6-week accredited Creative Guided Facilitation Training was delivered at Derry Women's Centre and Waterside Women's Centre.

Participants and facilitators have shared what stood out to them: a safe space to talk openly, friendships built through learning about each other's traditions and stories, and the confidence to step into facilitation and community leadership.
